5 Easy Summertime Recipes For Kids

Looking for fun and easy summertime recipes that don't break the bank or take all afternoon to prepare? Here are a few of my family's favorites:

1. Chocolate banana pops - Take a ripe banana, stick a Popsicle stick in one end and put in freezer. Melt some semisweet chocolate and coat the almost frozen bananas, place on parchment paper and stick them back in the freezer for about an hour. You can also add sprinkles to the pops before you freeze them or switch it up with white chocolate. Yummy!

2. Swizzle sticks - Swizzle sticks are simply cut up cubed or other fun shaped fruit (cookie cutters work best in circles, hearts or stars), pop them on a skewer, and stick them in the freezer for a bit. You end up with a great frozen treat that your kids can eat as-is, or stick them in some fun fruit juice, water or lemonade for added pizazz.

3. Dirt - There are many variations to this recipe out there so feel free to find your favorite. The idea behind this one is you take pudding, whipped cream, Oreo cookies crushed up, and any other sweet treats you can think of and layer them in a bowl. To get really creative, wash out an old beach pail or flower pot (without a hole- or cover before you begin) and layer in that - it's great to bring to a friend's house for a BBQ treat! We like to add gummy worms to our dirt as the topping for a cool effect.

4. Scotch-a-roos - A chocolate and peanut butter spin on Rice crispy treats. Put 6 cups of Rice crisp cereal in a bowl. Melt 1 cup sugar, 1 cup Karo lite syrup and 1 cup peanut butter (you can leave this out if you are going somewhere where nuts are a no-no) in a sauce pan. Stir frequently until everything is combined and it comes to a slight boil. Pour sugar mixture into the Rice crisp and mix up well. Quickly put into an 8x10 backing pan and pack down. You can use sandwich baggies to cover your hands so you don't get the sticky mess all over them. Melt 1/2 bag semisweet chocolate chips and 1/2 bag of butterscotch bits in a pan until melted, pour over the Rice crisp in the baking pan and chill for about 30 minutes. Cut and enjoy!

5. Coconut smoothies - Now these might take a little planning to make sure you have whole coconuts in your house, but they are worth it! Take whole coconuts, gently break in half with a small hammer on the floor (on a towel), and take any broken bits and scoop out the coconut meat as well as any juice that is in the coconut. In a blender - take 1/2 cup yogurt, 1/2 cup ice, coconut juice and meat, and any other fruit you'd like to add like pineapple, banana or strawberries. You can also skip the authentic coconut part and just get some coconut juice in your local grocery store and use fun plastic cups to serve your summertime treat.

Childrens Birthday Party Planning - 4 Easy Steps!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

You want your son or daughter's birthday to be a fun, memorable event for all.  Follow these four simple steps to create the perfect children's birthday party:

Invitations:This is where you set the theme of the party.  For an all boys' celebration, you may consider a theme such as dinosaurs or superheroes.  For girls', perhaps Disney princesses or Dora the Explorer.  (All of these invitations are available in the party aisles of your local Target or grocery store.)  If you plan to have a combined birthday party, choose a gender neutral theme, such as a circus or treasure island (an excellent way to combine both mermaids and pirates).  Invitationbox.com is a fabulous source for unique invitations.

Decorations: Whichever theme you choose, you should decorate with bright, fun colors.  If you're having a circus themed party, you may want to create a big top tent, complete with balloons and streamers.  Clowns and lions, tigers, and elephants can adorn the plates and cups.  (For affordable decorations, look at partymerchant.com)  Or, if you've chosen the treasure island theme, you can include miniature pirate ships on each table, with piñatas and mermaid balloons lining the party.

Food for kids: Children love finger food, so choose items that are easy to eat and won't leave a large mess.  Edible sparkles, colorful icing, and sprinkles help create fun desserts.  If you want to make truly unique cupcakes, go to www.gogocake.com.  There you can order edible images to top your goodies or watch tutorials and learn how to make them yourself.  Or consider Rice krispie treats with a chocolate drizzle.  If you make a sheet of them, you can decorate them with figurines to fit your theme.

Party favors: Sending children home with chocolate lollipops that match the party theme are a delicious option, and the children are sure to enjoy them once they get home.  Other gift ideas themed coloring books, character erasers, and crayon sets, which the kids can use at home or school.

Yeast Free Diet To Treat Candidiasis - The Essential Steps To Avoid Cravings and Nasty Side-Effects

A yeast free diet is one that contains little to no amount of yeast. This is the diet prescribed to treat candida overgrowth. The diet is typically followed over the course of six weeks until the symptoms of candidiasis subside.

Causes of Yeast Infections

There are a lot of species of yeast that thrive naturally in the body. Among them, Candida albicans is the most common, existing in the mouth, the digestive tract, the urinary tract, in the vagina and in the skin. Normally, fungal populations are kept in check but stress, the use of antibiotics and other medications cause an uncontrolled growth of the fungi that leads to the development of uncomfortable symptoms such as stomach discomfort and skin infections.

Food to Avoid

When on a yeast free diet it is important to avoid certain food items such as breads, rolls, cookies, pretzels, pastries and other kinds of food that contain yeast. You should also avoid vinegar and food that contain vinegar such as mayo, salad dressings, mustard, pickles and pickled food and barbeque sauce. Stay away from wine, beer and other alcoholic drinks such as cider.

It is also important to avoid moldy food. Avoid eating cheese, dried, smoked or pickled meats, cured bacon, mushrooms, peanuts and pistachios, soy sauce, miso and tempeh as well as malt. Avoid prepackaged herbs and teas as well as canned tomatoes.

Those following this kind of diet also need to note that sugary food items are off the list. They should avoid the consumption of processed sugar, naturally-sugary food and drinks like fruit juices and dried fruits, soft drinks, honey and maple syrup, corn syrup, chocolates, to name a few.

Limited Consumption

Starchy food like corn and potatoes should be eaten sparingly.

With all these restrictions most people are left wondering what food they are allowed to eat. There is no need to worry, however, since there are a lot of tasty food options to choose from even if one is following the yeast free diet.

Food items that you are allowed to eat include vegetables, especially dark, green and leafy veggies. Beans are a good source of protein. Meat, including beef, poultry and fish are allowed, as well as shellfish and uncured pork. Whole grains are allowed in the diet. These may include Rice, millet, barley, couscous and buckwheat. You can still enjoy pasta, unprocessed seeds and nuts as well as vegetable oils that are unrefined.

Following this kind of diet is hard. Aside from the diet there are natural ways that you can do to help speed up the treatment of fungal infections. Forget about using chemicals and other drugs. Natural herbs and supplements paired with this diet will help you see improvements in your condition in no time. Going to the root cause of the Candida infection is also equally important. For example, treating the illness that has resulted to the overgrowth of the fungi or lowering your levels of stress can effectively solve the problem.

Alternatives to Handing Out Candy at Halloween

Image : http://www.flickr.com

For most children, Halloween is all about the candy. It's the one time of year when all the talk about healthy eating goes out the window, and eating sugary treats by the pound begins. Although this is an exciting prospect for children, for parents, all they can think about is tooth decay and empty calories. Thankfully, there are alternatives to giving the children in your neighborhood a bucket of candy when they come trick or treating.

What Not To Give

Before deciding on an alternative to candy this Halloween, think about items that are not good ideas to give to children. Most Halloween safety web sites, as well as almost every local news channel, warn of the dangers of homemade treats. Stories of poisoned Rice Krispie Treats and apples with needles stuck in them are mostly exaggerated, but for safety's sake, parents are often warned not to let their children accept or eat these kinds of treats. Anything that doesn't come in a package is treated as suspect and disposed of by these safety-conscious parents.

Edible Alternatives

Instead of tooth rotting, fat building candy and chocolate, consider giving children sugar-free gum. This will satisfy the sweet tooth cravings all kids develop as Halloween approaches without the harmful side effects. You can also consider other, healthier snacks. Many people have offered Goldfish crackers as an alternative for toddlers and babies at Halloween, only to be surprised by how older kids reach for them too. Granola and cereal bars are also popular, healthier alternatives to sugary sweets.

Other Alternatives

Edible items are the traditional treat for Halloween, but there's no reason that you can't give out other items as well. Halloween is all about making the little ones happy, so anything that is interesting to them will be appreciated. Try giving out stickers with fun Halloween-themed pictures. Small, inexpensive party favors are a fun alternative as well. Temporary tattoos of bats, black cats, and witches would also be a big hit in the neighborhood. In order to make everyone happy, be sure to have some prizes that are appropriate for babies and toddlers as well - the point is to have healthy alternatives to candy, and you don't want to give a small child something that isn't safe for them instead.

Alternatives for Parents

If you are the parent of a child going trick-or-treating, you are probably concerned about what they are bringing home after their adventure in your community. Although you can decide what you give out for Halloween, you can't control what your neighbors give your kids. Refusing to let them have their hard-earned candy is going to be a struggle, so offer to buy it off of them by helping them get a video game or other toy that they've had their eye on in exchange for their candy. Cold, hard cash will probably get their attention as well.

By taking these Halloween candy alternatives into consideration, you can relieve some of the stress about your child's health this holiday, leaving you with more time to perfect your costume, rather than worrying about their next visit to the dentist.

150 ml (1/2 cup) cornmeal

Now mix in the cornmeal and chicken broth until it is really well mixed in.
Grab your Rice and carrots and mix them in too. Keep stirring is because you don't want it to get burnt.

Dog Treats - Weeding Out the Junk Food

Wheat-Free Treats
Did you know that dog's digestive systems cannot process corn, soy or wheat? Yet, because these are the cheapest grains we often find them in dog foods and treats. Do your pup a favor and steer away from wheat (flour) filled treats, and look for barley, oats, and brown Rice, which your pup's stomach can handle

Animal By-Products and Fat
Animal by-products are the yucky leftovers from processing that are deemed inedible for humans. They act as filler in many cheap treats, and are far from healthy for your dog. Some treats also use animal fat for flavoring, which makes them very attractive to your dog. However, dogs cannot process cooked fat, which you know if your dog has ever had the misfortune of licking bacon grease out of the pan. Let's just say the results aren't pretty, and can't be picked up with a doggy poo rake.

Chewy Treats
For many thousands of years wild dogs have chewed on bones as a part of their natural diet, and your dog should have bones as well. Bones are a great treat because they help clean your dog's teeth and let him alleviate his chewing desires. But certain chewy treats, like rawhide, should be avoided. Stick to the most natural chewy items, pig ears and bones, because man-made chewy treats can clog up your dog's intestines.

You know how sometimes you wish someone would come along and stop you from eating the whole box of cookies? Well, you can be that person for your dog, ensuring that he is healthy and happy. Stick to the good treats, and if you feel adventurous, try making some at home!

Looking For the Best Spanish Rice Recipe? Choose From Two

If your feckless search for the perfect Spanish Rice recipe has drawn a blank, you have reached the right place. Here is not one, but two tantalizing Rice recipes that compliment any delicacy perfectly- steak, Tacos, enchiladas or chicken.

Defined By Delightful Aromas And Colors

For some it's the nutty aroma that ignites their imagination, for many it's the rich flavor of homemade chicken stock that makes this dish simply irresistible. But what really helps the Rice dish acquire a stronger cachet is the method of preparing it- the process of first browning the rice with onions and garlic and then letting chicken stock and tomato take over the proceedings is simply sensational.

A Beacon Of Hope

The basic rice recipe is extremely simple, and hence promises to go down well with people with rudimentary culinary skills. Here's what is required:

½ cup rice

¼ bell pepper

¼ onion

Butter

Fresh garlic

Salt and pepper

1 tablespoon of tomato paste or 1 cup of fresh or cooked tomatoes, strained

Brown the rice in a skillet with butter, onion, garlic and pepper. When the rice turns a lovely golden brown, stir in the chicken broth and tomato paste. Cover and cook over medium heat till the rice is cooked. Needless to add, serve piping hot.

Aiming At A Size-Zero?

Here's another recipe especially for those engaged in an interminable battle with the bulge. The ingredients include:

1 cup uncooked instant rice

1 cup chopped onion

T cup chopped green bell pepper

½ teaspoon prepared mustard

¼ teaspoon pepper

1 can of whole tomatoes, chopped and undrained

1 can of tomato juice

1 vegetable cooking spray

First, coat a large skillet with vegetable cooking spray. Heat it a little, and then add the rice, onion and bell pepper. Sauté for a couple of minutes. Mix the rest of the ingredients and allow it to simmer uncovered for a while, or until the liquid is completely absorbed.

Relish each serving without any guilt, it contains just 180 calories, remember?

All ready to say Hola to these recipes? You'll never say Adios, though.

Jamaican Food Recipes - Rice and Peas

The most Jamaican of Jamaican food recipes has to be Rice and Peas. The world may know us for jerk chicken, but Rice and Peas is our comfortable old friend that we just cannot do without.

We eat it so often that it has become known as our "Coat of Arms". Ask a Jamaican about Sunday dinner, and the words "Rice and Peas" will almost definitely be in the answer. Some of us will eat it every day, and with every type of meat. Or with just gravy. Or all by itself.

Other countries in the world have variations, but none is exactly like ours, made delicious with coconut milk and the perfect blend of seasonings.

Before powdered and canned coconut milk and canned peas came on the market, the preparation of rice and peas was a lengthy process. A dry coconut would have to be split, the coconut meat taken out and grated, then put through a sieve and the milk squeezed out. Some people still prefer to do it this way, but in addition to being time consuming, grating coconut is not easy on the fingers. So those of us who treasure our hands are grateful that we have easier alternatives to grating!

Ready to cook?

Jamaican Rice and Peas

2 cups parboiled rice1/2 cup red peas, dried or canned4 cups water1 50g sachet of coconut milk powder, or 1/2 of a 400ml can of coconut milk1 tsp salt1 small onion, chopped1 stalk escallion (crushed)1 sprig thyme1/4 tsp pimento (all spice)pinch of black pepper1 whole green scotch bonnet pepper (or other hot pepper)

If using dried peas, soak them for a few hours (or overnight) in water to soften. Boil peas in cold water until tender. Pour off stock from peas and measure. Add enough water and coconut milk/coconut milk powder to make 4 cups of liquid, and add to peas.

If using canned peas, there is no need to cook them beforehand. Just add the four cups of liquid as described above.

To the mixture of peas, water and coconut milk, add all the seasonings and spices. Allow to simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.

Add the rice to this mixture, and stir well. Increase flame until liquid boils. Then reduce heat and cover. Simmer until rice grains are tender. Apart from the first stir, try not to stir the mixture again while cooking, as this might make it sticky.

A delicious alternative to red peas is gungo (pigeon) peas. This version is especially popular at Christmas time when gungo is in season. Use canned or green gungo peas. There is no need to soak green gungo. Merely boil until tender, then continue the recipe as described.

Rice and Peas makes a nutritious, filling and tasty accompaniment to a wide array of meat dishes.

It also makes a good meal for vegetarians, as the peas provide a lot of protein.

Halloween Gift Baskets - Is Trick Or Treating Still Safe in Today's World?

Halloween...in years past was a fun, festive day for children and families across America.

Moms busied themselves, by cooking, baking and making their favorite treats for the kids school parties, while getting ready for those little ghosts, witches and goblins, who came knocking on doors, after the sun went down.

Halloween gift baskets and bags filled with popcorn balls, cupcakes, candied apples, Rice crispy treats and even store bought candy. Superhero and monster costumes were the fashion, as it is today.

The difference between now and then is ensuring the safety of our children.

Halloween gift baskets, candy baskets and candy gift boxes are still filled with the stuff kids love. Although, most generally, in today's world...it isn't safe for children to trick or treat alone or in a group, after the sun goes down.

Keeping our children safe is a parent's biggest worry. And having fun festivities and gift ideas that help curb that fear, while surprising the kids with safe goodies and treats has become the rage.

Today, many parents have affordable Halloween gift baskets delivered to their kid's front door or purchase the goodies that make up spooktacular Halloween treats at reliable shops and stores. They have parties for the neighborhood kids, go to the school's Halloween carnival or take the kids to a spooktacular city or county function.

Having Halloween gift basket ideas in your bag of tricks...may make the difference between being safe or unsafe.

Examples of Affordable Halloween Baskets and Gifts that Dazzle the Kids

Happy Haunting - gather all the neighborhood witches together for a seasonal treat with a bouquet of Witches Poo Black Cat Pops and much more. Bring the magic to your house this Halloween night.

Happy Jack's Pumpkin of Treats light little faces up with happy grins and hold the treats we think of, when we think of Halloween.

Boo! Mania holds enjoyable fun for the entire family, arriving with plenty of themed goodies in three candy gift boxes.

Hexes and Potions give the kids just enough treats to count, dump out and count again, as their evening fills with fun memories and popcorn becomes the biggest treat of all.

A Halloween Candy Pumpkin Cake...if you can imagine! Surprising the kids with chocolate bars, fudge and candy corn...shaped into a pumpkin cake, brings laughter and a spooktacular evening.

There are many ways to have a safe Halloween and dazzle the kids at the same time. And let us remember the kids who are living in dorm rooms and those of us, who never grew up.

Indonesian Meatball Fried Rice

Rice is Indonesian everyday food. We, Indonesians, eat steamed Rice 3 times a day. Usually we eat it with additional savoury side dishes (since there is no taste of Rice). To make a different kind of style to eat Rice, we fry it and by adding combination of several traditional Indonesian sauces, the taste of this kind of dish is quite good; savoury, a little bit sweet and of course spicy, since we Indonesian love hot and spicy dish. But if you do not like spicy food, you can change the chillies with green bell pepper. The most common Indonesian Fried Rice is Meatball Fried Rice. Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:

2 plates cold cooked Rice
10 ready to use Beef Meatballs, sliced

Onion, sliced
1 teaspoon Candlenut Powder
1 stalk Spring Onion, sliced
3 tablespoons Oyster Sauce

How To Smooth and Rejuvenate Your Skin With Rice

Everyday stress can really take its toll on you; trust me, I've been there! Whether you're spending your day toiling behind a computer screen in your cubicle, or doing a lot of yard work outside, everyday life inevitably drains you, it's a fact of life. The remedy to this is to take good care of yourself constantly throughout the day, and to give yourself little perks along the way.

One of my favorite little "treats" to give myself is a good face cleansing. What are the marks of something that really cleans your face and leaves you feeling so much more alive? For one, I always like to put something on my face first that will cleanse it gently and make my skin tingle. After that, I like to put something on that will really take it to the next level and firm up my skin so it doesn't feel like it's dragging me down the next day. After that, I either leave it alone and go to bed, or I add a moisturizer if I feel the two previous things haven't done their job to my satisfaction.

So what is this process? First, take some coarse, natural sea salt. I bought mine in a Korean grocery store, but you can find some at your local Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. It doesn't take much salt, about half a tablespoon or a whole tablespoon will do, but it's really up to you. Next pour some clean water in a small bowl and add the salt, gently stirring it to dissolve the salt. Take a cotton pad, soak it and dab all around your face. Leave it on until it's dry (your face should tingle a little as it does so) and rinse off the residual salt.

Next, take a couple tablespoons of raw Rice and put them in a clean coffee grinder and grind into a fine powder. Dump this out into another small, clean bowl and add a dab of extra virgin olive oil and enough clean water to make a thick paste. Alternately, you could substitute honey and milk for the olive oil and water respectively.

Now just rub the paste all over your face and let it rest for at least five minutes, or up to fifteen. Try to get it on as thick as you can and be sure to do it over the sink because you will make a mess. It does feel nice, (almost like playing with beach sand) as you rub it over your skin.

Once it's been on for a sufficient amount of time, rub off the excess to exfoliate your skin and rinse of the rest. Your skin should feel firmer and you should feel more energized and refreshed!

Rice Krispy Treats "Commuter" ad

Great ad featuring a commuter who learns the benefits of Rice Krispy treats. ** I actually met this guy in person at a Westwood (LA) Starbucks.
