Concerned About What's in Your Commercial Pet Food? Try These Homemade Cat Food and Treats

Every day lately, it seems there is another pet food recall, warning dog and cat owners not to feed their pets different brands of foods. This is getting scary. Who knows which pet food will be recalled next. Though I am still using the kibble my cats normally eat, I am now supplementing my pets with a few homemade recipes. These are not meant for feeding your pets forever, since I"m not a vet or nutritionist but they are good for filling their furry tummies while we wait out the lowdown on the canned foods, which seem most affected by these pet food recalls. Here are the basic recipes I am using, don't add other ingredients unless you know for sure that they don't hurt your pets. We all know chocolate is off-limits to pets, as are other foods such as onions. Stick with these ingredients, which seem to be pet safe, according to pet experts I've read about.

Homemade Cat Food

2 cups ground chicken, lean beef or turkey, thoroughly cooked and diced;
4 cups Rice, cooked in chicken or beef broth;
1/2 cup potatoes, ground;
1/4 cup spinach or carrots, ground;
1/4 cup green beans, ground;
2 tbsp melted butter;
dash of garlic powder

Mix everything together in large pot or bowl. Make sure it is completely cool before feeding to your cat. Store in covered container in refrigerator.

Homemade Cat Treats

1 1/2 cup oats, ground;
1/4 cup butter;
1/2 cup flour;
1/2 cup chicken broth;
1/4 cup cubed or shredded American or mild cheddar cheese -or- shredded chicken

Mix all ingredients together, form small cookies and bake on greased cookie sheet until done at 350 degrees. Roughly 25 minutes but check as ovens vary. Do not overcook.

Our pets deserve food that is safe, so hopefully, this current pet food crisis will alert the authorities to make sure they buy quality products and be more careful of what they put in their pet food recipes. Cats have specific nutritional needs so don't feed them any of these recipes on a long term basis, as I do not know the breakdown of nutritional value for them. But, by using fresh, healthful ingredients, cooking the meat thoroughly and storing the food you make in the refrigerator, it can help to tie your kitty over until it is safe to go buy food at the store again. Enjoy.

Fondant Cake - Snow White Theme

Made this cake for my niece's 7th birthday it is a half sheet carrot cake with cream chesse filling and walnuts. The cottage was made with rice krispies treats recipe and decorated in fondant. The Grass was piped with Cream Chese Buttercream and covered sides in fondant the decorations are gumpaste, fondant and plastic. I am not used to piping so my hand was sore for days after this cake. The important thing is that my Niece absolutely loved it. I also added a few pics of both my nieces playing a game I invented called the Poison Apple. I placed Apples on a stick and put them in a couldron and at the bottom I added dry Ice and water for that special effect whomever got a poison apple would get a price and after the game was over they all got to decorate their apples with caramel, chocolate, nuts, and other goodies...the kids loved it.

This Construction Party Menu has Some Creative Recipe Ideas

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Ah, construction, the foundation of the very house where the party to celebrate it is located. It is fairly easy to set up the decoration for a construction theme, a bunch of unused lumber, some hammer and nails, hard hats, overalls, and viola you're your house will scream under construction without even needing to remodel anything. The color orange with white stripes like the barrels, or the yellow of caution tape always go with construction as a theme. Some menu items that go with construction can either be creative to do with the theme or hearty and filling like would be eaten before setting to work.

A construction party menu can be for kids and adults since this is a suitable for any age theme. Don't hold yourself back as far as the tasty treats go and certainly try to be creative! Try starting off with some Rice Crispy Treat building blocks. Dye them red with red food coloring when making them and they'll look just like bricks. If you have the time you can create a fun and edible construction piece, like a building out of them. Another tasty treat is concrete pudding mix. Its yummy and you'll find the recipe later on in the article. Have a breakfast themed party for your construction party with some Linking Log Sausage links, Sunny Side Up Eggs, and Floor Board Texas Toast. Top it off with some Cement Sausage Gravy. All are made like normal, but have fun names for the party theme.

Concrete Pudding Mix is made for dessert or a great Construction party snack. You'll need; one white chocolate pudding mix, Oreo Cookie pieces and Dark Chocolate Chunks. Mix up the white chocolate pudding and place in the fridge to cool. To serve, place a layer of Oreo Cookie pieces in the bottom of a clear wine glass. On top of that place a layer of Dark Chocolate Chunks and finally fill to the top with White Chocolate Pudding. You can garnish your construction party treat with a whole Oreo Cookie or a sprig of mint.

After the party is over you may think it was a real construction zone if your guests are anything but the cleanest people on earth. So do yourself a big favor before hand and plan out how the cleaning will go when setting up the party. One of the most basic things to remember is disposables, such as paper plates that you don't have to wash.

Cajun Red Beans & Rice

Ingredients

- 1 pound of dried red beans
- 2 cups of chopped onions (white or yellow)
- 1 cup of chopped parsley
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
- pinch of cayenne pepper
- 4 teaspoons of chopped garlic
- 2 links of smoked sausage (cut in half and then cut into ¾ inch pieces)
- 3 strips of bacon
- 10 cups of chicken stock (You can substitute water if you like, or use a half water half stock mixture)
- 4 cups of Rice
- ½ cup of chopped green onions for garnishing
- Sour cream for garnishing (This is strictly optional)

Spicy add-ins; If you want the meal to be a little more spicy, add ½ cup of chopped Tasso, (a Cajun sausage) and a little more cayenne pepper.

Preparation

In a large container, the night before you serve the meal, cover the beans with water, by about 2 inches. Let the beans soak overnight or for a minimum of 8-10 hours.

Drain the beans.

Take the bacon and cut it into small pieces, add to a large pre-heated pot. If you want the dish to be more spicy, add the chopped Tasso and cook for about 1-2 minutes.

Add the onions, salt, pepper and cayenne and cook for about 4 minutes, or until the onions look caramelized. Add the sausage and parsley and cook until the sausage is brown, about 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic and stir for another minute.

Add the beans and chicken stock, bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, uncovered for 2-3 hours. Stir occasionally and to check to see if the beans are getting too thick, if so you may need to ad water.

(I like my beans on the thick side and after about 1 ½ -2 hours I take 1/3 of the beans out of the pot and mash them, then reinsert them into the pot.) Then I let them cook for another ½ -1 hours.

Pre-cook the Rice using the standard formula of 2 cups of water or chicken stock, for 1 cup of Rice, add about 1 teaspoon of salt if you use water, but do not add salt if you use chicken stock.

Serve the beans & sausage mixture over a bed of warm rice and garnish as desired with the green onions and/or sour cream.

The Bedroom Cake

This is a cake I made for my friend Dane. It was for his boyfriend's birthday. He wants to be an interior designer, he had even given Dane a floor plan of how his room would look. So, we worked with that, and I came up with this. The furniture is mostly rice crispy treats. Just in case you're wondering, the cake is marble. The song is The Popcorn Song by Hot Butter. All rights belong to them.

Turcake!

This is a fondant Thanksgiving cake sculpted and designed to look like a turkey fresh out of the oven, fixed with all the trimmings! The entire cake is chocolate with alternating buttercream fillings of chocolate and vanilla. YUMM-O! The cake was hand painted using gel food coloring mixed with vodka and I tried my best to replicate the skin of the turkey! All the little elements were made using gumpaste and the giant turkey legs were made using Rice Krispy Treats! Can you believe I had never made Rice Krispy Treats before in my life?! I couldn't believe how easy it was to sculpt the legs! :) Hope you all like it! :)
