Creative Uses for Cereal

Cereal - one of  North America's favorite breakfast food. There are many creative things to do and ways you and your kids can play with this common food.

Tasty Math: Using cereal is a great way to practice math concepts with your kids, especially for visual and tactile learners. You could use different types of cereal to represent 1's, 10's, and 100's for math problems including simple addition, subtraction, and multiplication. It's math practice you can snack on after.

Edible Jewelery: Use O-shaped cereal and dental floss or licoRice shoestrings to make edible and snack-able bracelets and necklaces.

For the Birds: Once in a while you go to grab the cereal and find a box of stale, unappetizing O's. What to do? Create a treat for the birds. Use some yarn, knot the bottom and string the O's. Tie around a tree branch in front of your window so you can watch the bird's enjoy their treat. Make sure you DO NOT use a cereal with added sugar!

Cereal Bars: Take your favorite marshmallow & crispy Rice treat recipe and substitute different cereals for a different cereal sensation. You can also slip some dried fruit and nuts in to make it more healthy. My favorite is crispy Rice cereal with some toasted oatmeal, toasted pumpkin seeds, and dried cranberries mixed in!

Savory Cereal: Another great use for stale cereal, toss unsweetened cereal with a little oil of your choice, and your favorite seasoning: a ranch dip mix, Cajun seasoning, chili powder, or whatever blend of spices your family loves. Spread out on a lined baking sheet and bake in a low oven (200 degrees F) stirring occasionally until they are dry and toasty. Keep an eye on them! Cool and enjoy.

Carrot Cookies and Chocolate Scotcheroos

Here are two cookie recipes my family enjoys and I hope you will also like them. Do you love carrot cake? If you do, my first recipe is a fabulous subsitite.

Ingredients for Carrot Cookies:

1 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup raw grated carrots
2 ½ cup flour
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. almond flavoring
2 tsp. baking powder
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. orange juice

Here is the method:

Cream shortening and sugar together. Add egg. Mix well. Add carrot and flavorings. Mix and add dry ingredients. Drop by teaspoons on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees until lightly browned. When cool, spread with a little icing made with powdered sugar and orange juice. Yield 4 to 5 dozen.

I love Rice Krispie Treats and most people make them with marshmallows. Try this variation with corn syrup, peanut butter, chocolate and butterscotch morsels. My father-in-law used to make this recipe when my children were young. They are yummy!!!

Ingredients for Chocolate Scotcheroos:

1 cup sugar
1 cup peanut butter
6 cups Rice Krispies
1 6-oz. package butterscotch morsels
1 cup light corn syrup
1 6-oz. package chocolate morsels

Here is the method:

Cook sugar and corn syrup over low heat until it boils. Stir in peanut butter. Mix in Rice Krispies. Press into buttered 9x13 inch pan. Let harden. In the meantime, melt over hot water in a double boiler, the chocolate and butterscotch morels. Stir to blend. Spread on Rice Krispie mixture. Chill until top is firm and then cut into squares.

Finding the Perfect Rice Crispy Treats Recipe

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Rice crispy treats recipe ignites thousands of wonderful memories in me. It's a recipe that can sweeten dreams, throw tastebuds into a tizzy and send your imagination soaring. And this kind of uninhibited frenzy is just not restricted to kids alone. Grown-ups too have an inscrutable affinity for this all time-favorite dessert.

Stir Up Some Passion

The candy corn recipe is the perfect way to bring together some sinful ingredients- candies, marshmallows and crispy Rice cereal. Here's what the recipe requires:

½ cup butter

10 cups crispy Rice cereal

9 cups miniature marshmallows

2 cups candy corn

A few drops of yellow and red food colors

Set the ball rolling by bringing together the rice cereal and candy corn in a large bowl. Keep the mixture aside. In another large bowl, melt butter and marshmallows over low heat, until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Remove from the heat and add a dash of red and yellow colors. Mix the cereal and the melted marshmallows, stirring as fast as you can. Spread this mixture on a large, greased baking pan. Press down with buttered hands or a spatula. Allow it to cool. Thereafter, cut into squares and watch them do the quintessential disappearing act.

Just in case you are woefully starved of ideas for Halloween snacks, use this delightful recipe with minor variations. Replace the baking pan with a Jack 'O' Lantern styled pan, and watch the animated reactions that follow.

Fun With Flavors

Add a modicum of your favorite flavors and this dessert makes the stunning transformation from boring to brilliant. Here's how:

40 large marshmallows

½ cup butter or margarine

4 cups rice crispy cereal

A sprinkle of vanilla and almond extracts

Bring together marshmallows and butter in a large microwave safe bowl. Microwave for about 10 minutes, stirring at regular intervals. When melted, add in the extracts. Mix the cereal and transfer to a greased pan. Once cool, it'll be high treason not to succumb to their delightful flavors.

Homemade raspberry marshmallows, crispy chocolate cereal or peanut butter - there's no dearth of inspiration when it comes to creating the most delectable of all creations. It's only your insular thinking that can come in your way.

8 Ways to Shake Off the No-Good-Bad-Day Blues

Some days are better than others. Some days are fabulous, and others are...well, just awful! Yesterday was one of those days. The awful kind. The kind where you think, "How could it get any worse?" And then, it does. But I was determined to not let it get the best of me!

It started with me. Yep, I set the tone for the day and I blew it. I just got in this bad mood, this funk. I didn't take the time to calm myself down, or pray or breathe...I just kept plugging along with all the things I thought I HAD to do.

Then Jason, my three year old, started having a bad day. He got really whiny and grouchy, being snatchy with his sister and not listening to his mommy. Time outs weren't working. Nothing was working. And I certainly didn't handle everything well.

So after apologizing to Jason for being such a grouch, I said to myself, "This has GOT to stop! We are going to make this a GOOD day!" So, we decided to go to our local pool. It was a beautiful hot summer day. Perfect pool weather. I gathered our things together (no small task, as I'm sure you know) and we headed over to go for a swim.

The very moment we walked up to the front desk to check in, it began to POUR down rain. Out of nowhere! I thought, "Well, they were gonna get wet anyway! They can play in the rain!" So, I'm changing them into their swimsuits, swim diapers, slathering them with sunscreen in the locker room. We're about to head out the door to the pool area when I hear a big rumbling noise and all the lifeguards whistles blow. Thunder, great. Now we can't swim for 30 more minutes, and free swim ends in one hour. That's it. We're going home!

I try to explain to my children why were leaving as we're walking to the car, past the beautiful, calm, empty pool, WHILE THE SUN IS OUT. The only song I'm singing is the 'no-good-bad day blues!' And I'm about to fall on the ground and throw a temper tantrum myself.

I had to stop by the grocery store on the way home (weeping and wailing in the back seat). At the store, I saw a beam of light from heaven onto a box in the toy section: a slip and slide! The angels were singing, my children were cheering! Yes! I will salvage the remains of this terrible day! No one can stop me now! I have....a slip and slide!

I invited some little friends over, and there were happy squeals of delight in my backyard. I sat there on my patio, with my ice water with lemon slice, watching my children play and felt so happy.

Purchasing a slip and slide is definitely not the answer to all life's problems, but it does help with some. Here are a few things I've learned to help turn a bad day into a good one when you have children.

1) Hugs & Kisses. These go a long way in any situation. They can diffuse bad attitudes (for both mommy and child), heal boo-boos, and reassure everyone of love.

2) Step Outside and Breathe Fresh Air. When all hell breaks loose in the house, try taking a quick breather outside. Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, and out for 8. It helps send oxygen to your brain, which you will need to manage the family chaos with clarity and kindness. And while you're out there, say a little prayer too. We need all the help we can get!

3) Change the Scenery. If you're all inside, go outside. If you're outside, go inside. If they're glued to the Tube, turn it off and pull out the Legos. Go over to a friend's house or have some friends over. You get the idea.

4) Do Something Fun as a Family. Read a book on the couch together. Make Rice Krispy treats. Color. Build a fort with sheets. Focusing on a fun project takes the focus off what (or maybe who) was going wrong before.

5) Do Something for Someone Else. If you're making Rice Krispy treats, take some over to a friend. If you're coloring, draw something and mail it to the Grandmas.

6) Be Silly. Do a silly dance. Sing a silly song. Have a tickle fight. Make everyone participate.

7) Have Pizza or McDonald's for Dinner. I don't know how it is at you're house, but I get immediately upgraded to superhero status when we have either of those things for dinner.

8) Go to Bed Early. If all else fails, go to bed early (including you) and call it a day. Things will be better in the morning.

If your day is taking a downward spiral, and you're singing the 'no-good-bad-day blues,' take a few of these suggestions to help turn things around for you and your family! I use them on a regular basis!

What To Do for Tendonitis Treatment - Doctor or Self Care?

The Different Kinds of Tendonitis

Depending upon which joint you move that is effected by tendinitis will generate many different signs and symptoms. Some of these will include mild swelling, pain and also tenderness. It depends on where the pain is located that really creates a concern. Another concern is depending upon the type of tendonitis you have will determine the tendonitis treatment that is necessary.

Golfers elbow, tennis elbow, swimmers shoulder and jumpers knee are some of the common names that are associated with tendonitis. Depending upon what you have will determine the treatment.

Pain that emerges on the outer side of the forearm (located close to the elbow) when the forearm is rotated or one tries to grab hold of an item is associated with tennis elbow. Achilles tendonitis causes pain to develop right above the heel.

if you are suffering from Adductor tendonitis, you are going to feel a pain in your groin area. Patellar tendonitis is an excruciating pain directly below the knee cap. Shoulder pain can be associated with rotator cuff tendonitis.

Some Tendonitis Treatments

A patient wants to find a treatment that is going to stop the pain from happening over and over again, and also find a way to keep the inflammation down. There are really two trains of thought when it comes to this. One is doctor prescribed and the other is taking care of it at your home yourself.

If the pain and inflammation is severe a doctor may use a corticosteroid injection. Having these injections repeatedly can cause damage and weaken the tendon.

Another tendinitis treatment that is commonly prescribed by doctors is physical therapy sessions as well as exercise. This will help to strengthen the affected muscles and joints. Sometimes when they tendon has been severely torn surgery may become necessary.

The removal of damaged tendons aids in the formation of healthy tissue. Certain patients are lucky enough to gain full function and reduced pain through the repair of a "full-thickness" tendon tear.

Treat Tendonitis at Home

People have used the word Rice to help them treat their tendonitis symptoms at home. The word Rice stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. When mild symptoms are occurring this procedure seems to work very well. Sometimes this procedure can actually avoid additional medical costs.

Lets talk about how to use RICE effectively. First thing you must do is protect the problem area. This can be done using crutches, elastic wraps, splints, slings, and canes. These are just a few of the items that can be used to protect the injured and affect their. What these do is actually promote the healing process and will prevent any additional injury. You must rest the affected area by cutting back on your activities that will make the pain worse and cause more inflammation. Ice is used to help reduce the amount of muscle spasms and also the swelling.

An elastic wrap, such as an Ace bandage, can be used to provide compression. Compression is a means of reducing swelling and keeping the joint in its proper position. In some cases, a splint may be used to keep the joint from moving. Then keep the joint elevated to reduce the blood flow, which will help with swelling and pain.

In many cases, rest and medication helps to lessen the inflammation and pain of tendonitis. A collection of exercises and preventive treatment for tendonitis will help to maintain a normal range of motion regarding the joints.

When your tendonitis symptoms go from mild to severe and the current treatments are not providing relief a more severe approach may become necessary. Surgical restoration of the affected joint may be the best tendonitis treatment. But this would be only a last resort if all else fails.
