Insider's Guide to the Black Dagger Brotherhood - Series Backgrounder Good For Writers, Not Readers

Rice krispie treats

J.R. Ward compiled a collection of short stories, deleted scenes, character studies, and writing advice in her Insider's Guide to the Black Dagger Brotherhood. It's an excellent resource for writers who enjoy the paranormal romance/urban fantasy genres, but it is a bit too behind the scenes for the average reader.

Stories/Deleted Scenes

The book opens with a novella that explores the relationship between the vampire couple Bella and Zsadist after the birth of their child. Years before the time line in the book series, Zsadist lived a life of slavery, and until he met Bella, he believed he was bad news for any woman. Bella and other characters help him heal and build a good relationship with his baby daughter. The novella provides deeper insight into the characters as well as a nice appetizer to help loyal readers wait until the next book comes out.

The short section of deleted scenes -- J.R. Ward uses most of the material she writes, so deleted scenes are few and far between -- provides some additional insight into the characters. Many of the other snippets and character interviews are pulled from the Black Dagger Brotherhood website, so they don't break any new ground for many fans of the series.

Writing Tips

J.R. Ward included one chapter titled For Writers. In it, she gives her eight commandments for writing:

Persist and Reinvent: Keep at your writing, making changes to your focus as needed.
Write Out Loud: Don't censor your vision. Capture it on the page to your best ability.
Own Your Own Work: Learn and practice to become a better writer. Don't depend on everyone else to solve your writing problems.
Plotlines Are Like Sharks: Your plot most move, or it will die.
Sweat Equity Is the Best Investment: Writing is a job, and the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.
Conflict Is King: Without conflict, you don't have a story that is worth telling.
Credible Surprise Is Queen: You shouldn't be able to guess what will happen too early in the story, but characters' actions must be believable.
Listen to Your Rice Krispies: Let your characters be who they are. Capture them as they appear to you. Unfortunately, she doesn't really define them in this section. Rather, the previous section of character dossiers contains definitions and specific examples of each commandment.

Recommendation

The Insider's Guide is a good book, but it suffers from trying to be everything to everyone. Writers who are looking for a writing book will likely be disappointed by the number of pages that don't discuss writing at all. The inclusion of writing tips in sections of the book not labeled specifically for writers could keep these readers from finding the real meat of the writing advice.

Readers of the series will skim over the pages about Ward's writing process and end the book wishing there had been more stories.

The best audience for the book is writers of paranormal stories. They will enjoy the specific information about the genre, the stories that illuminate the characters in the books, and the interesting way Ward treats her characters. Of particular interest is the book proposal, presented as submitted, mistakes and all.

Is Feeding Baby Rice Cereal Hurting Your Baby?

It's on the shelf in every grocery store and in every book on baby care - but is feeding baby Rice cereal actually hurting your child? Extensive studies on cereal are showing it's not the safe, wonderful food you've been taught... and studies on children are showing we've been starting babies on foods they're not ready for.

What problems could "gentle" Rice cereal cause? The startling truth is that studies have shown rice cereal is anything but gentle on baby's immature digestive system. Parents who, for decades, have seen their babies start having gas, constipation, bloating, fussiness, and even allergic reactions after starting cereal are finally getting the scientific evidence behind them to be taken seriously. It is not a good food for babies.

Cereal causes a few problems. First, a sixteen year study done in Australia has shown that rice cereal causes far more reactions than either cow's milk or soy - two major allergens. It also causes more severe reactions in the infant's digestive system, causing damage to the gut wall and lining.

The western world tends to think that rice allergies are rare mostly because there's not a whole lot of rice eaten in many countries. Asian countries, however, eat a lot rice and rice allergy is quite common. Rice is not the completely allergy-free food you've been lead to believe.

Another problem with rice is that it's binding. That's right - it clogs the digestive system up. If somebody has diarrhea they're advised to eat mostly rice and bananas to help stop the diarrhea. The rice stops things up - feeding baby rice cereal can cause problems with constipation. Many babies get severely constipated on rice cereal.

Rice, like all cereal grains, is hard for babies to digest. Children don't develop the enzymes to break down starches and grains until after their first birthday. They just don't handle rice, oats, wheat, corn, or other grains well. Many parents have noticed that grains like this go in one end of the baby and come right out the other. They're not being digested at all.

It's is nutritionally poor. Rice just doesn't have a lot to offer your baby! It's fortified with iron that's hard for baby to absorb, and can further increase the constipating effects of rice cereal. Health Canada has even come right out and stated that the iron in rice and other infant cereals is hard to absorb as compared to the iron in meats.

So rice cereal - and other cereals - are not really good for your baby. They're actually pretty bad choices. Consider starting your baby with another solid food choice - one that offers a lot of nutrition and is truly easy to digest.

Snacks That Raise the Bar

Rice krispie treats

You may be familiar with health professionals suggesting that you eat snacks throughout the day, and 'snack bars' seem like an obvious choice. But walk into that aisle of the grocery store and you are bombarded with bright colors, health claims, and messages on each and every box. Which ones are better choices and which ones are more like camouflaged candy bars?

One main ingredient to look for in snack items is fiber. It helps fill you up and keep your system moving. Current recommendations suggest that adults need 20 to 35 grams of fiber each day. A product or a food item can be labeled "high fiber" when it contains more than 5g of fiber per serving. And bran, the outer layer of the whole grain, is fiber rich. However, they don't make it easy - just seeing the words "fiber" or "bran" on the food package does not guarantee a well-balanced product.

In addition to a good amount of fiber, you also want a snack bar to have several grams of protein and fat to balance out the carbohydrates from the grains and not to have too many grams of sugar (aim for 10 grams or less).

Quaker makes an easy lesson for us with its "Breakfast Cookies." At least they are not hiding anything with this product - with 220 calories and 19 grams of sugar, this breakfast item surely is just a cookie fortified with a handful of vitamins. You will find that other bars are often little more than vitamin-fortified Rice Krispies Treats.

The new Oats and Chocolate Fiber One Bar touts 35% of the daily value of fiber in huge print on the front of the box. I give this product an honorable mention. With drizzled chocolate on top and chocolate chips inside, this bar is a sweet and tasty treat. The nutritional information is 140 calories and 9 grams of fiber, but it also has 10 grams of sugar and only 2 grams of protein. In addition, these bars contain high fructose corn syrup, as well as hydrogenated coconut oil. On the other hand, I highly recommend Fiber One cereal as a breakfast food or snack (mix with nuts and dried fruit for a fantastic homemade trail mix). One-half cup has only 60 calories and 15 grams of fiber.

All-Bran also has a bar that I will give an honorable mention. It advertises 20% of your daily fiber needs on the package. Each bar has about 130 calories, 5 grams of fiber, only half a gram of saturated fat, and no refined grains. It has moderately high sugar at 11 grams, but at least it comes with a decent dose of fiber. In contrast, Post Raisin Bran Cereal Bars have only 3 grams of fiber and some refined "wheat flakes" mixed in with their whole grains. Even lower on the continuum would be Kellogg's Raisin Bran Crunch bars - they have more white Rice than any whole grain, leaving each bar with only one gram of fiber. Why even use bran in the name of that bar?

Kashi is a current favorite brand of mine. They now have hot and cold cereals, granola bars, snack bars, and yes, you heard it here, cookies!, all made with their signature seven-grain blend. A cookie with 3-4 grams of fiber may be a nutritionists dream come true. Their TLC crunchy and chewy granola bars, as well as their GoLean snack bars are great choices for snacks on the run. The granola bars have 4 grams of fiber, 7 grams of protein, and 5-7 grams of sugar. The snack bars have 6 grams of fiber and 9-12 grams of protein. (Numbers vary depending on the flavor). In addition, all of the ingredients are natural - no manufactured sugars or hydrogenated oils.

As you can see, it is all relative. Kashi remains my top choice of brand. However, keep in mind these guidelines when checking food labels: Look for at least 4 or 5 grams of fiber and protein and less than 10 grams of sugar. Read over the ingredient list. Is it nice and short? Can you pronounce all of the words? Going with the old adage that "we are what we eat," it is nice to at least be able to pronounce what we are putting inside our bodies.

Snack on! Without constant sources of energy throughout the day, your mental clarity and mood are sure to suffer. If you don't believe it - ask your coworkers or family. They may hint at a few mood swings, depending on the last time you have eaten that day.

Filipino Recipes - Kutsinta - Pinoy Food

Kutsinta is another top Pinoy favorite snack. It is prepared using lye water which enhances its color. It is chewy and somewhat sticky but you would surely love the unique taste especially if it is your first time to try this delicious treat. I love it best with lots and lots of grated coconut for the toppings. It is one of the foods that lead me to remember the good old days that I spent in school. My best friend and I used to spend our breaks in the soccer field with a paper plate full of kutsinta. We just talk and talk about girly stuff without realizing that we have already consumed all of the kutsinta in no time at all.

If you want to try Filipino delicacies, you should never miss the yummy kutsinta. Surely, you would be asking for more once you take a bite of this delightful treat.

How to Host a Candy Themed Party

Rice krispie treats

The word "candy" is powerful enough to excite kids like Santa on Christmas morning and take adults back to their carefree childhood memories. Even the most health conscious people have a weakness in their hearts for some type of candy. Some may love chocolate, while for others, gummy bears are the sweets they can't resist. With sweets being the ultimate comfort food for people of all ages, it's no wonder that candy themed parties for both children and adults have become increasingly popular these last few years.

Candy themed parties can be easily hosted at home by incorporating a wide variety of candy-themed activities, games and refreshments. For children, how you plan a candy themed shindig is mostly based on the ages of the kids attending. For small children, parties should be simpler in décor and the amount of skill required for games and activities. Parents of kids of any age can start out by setting the tone for their gathering by sending out candy themed or candy decorated invitations. The next step is to use candy themed supplies like balloons, decorations, plates and cups. Once these basics are set up, it is time for the fun part of the planning.

A major part of any successful kids' parties are the games and activities that will keep children entertained. Candy and dessert themed crafts are a great way to differentiate from traditional staples like pin-the-tail on-the-donkey and Simon Says. Kids as young as 3 years old can partake in a wide variety of fun stuff that will let them personalize their own edible creations. With Sugar Cookie Decorating, children can break out the frosting and candies and pretend to be a great pastry chef as they design their own cookie.

Chocolate Sculptures is another popular activity that kids as young as 3 can enjoy even though it sounds more complex than it really is. Children just pick a sculpture that catches their fancy and then create their own masterpiece with candy, sprinkles and frosting.

For kids who prefer a giant wad of chewing gum to chocolate, Gumball Machine Decorating lets them give a machine a makeover with markers and edible decorations, plus a complimentary bag of gumballs to get that machine truly rolling.

For children who are a bit older at 5 and over, the crafts get a little more intensive, with activities like Candy Jewelry and Sugar Art. Little girls with a sweet tooth who are also aspiring fashionistas will adore making Candy Jewelry, as it combines the best of both worlds. Kids get to create their own bracelet or necklace made entirely of edible beads and charms for a piece that not only looks greats but tastes great too.

Another fun choice for kids over 5 years old is Sugar Art. Children get to pick their own vessel then fill it with over 10 choices of colored sugar, creating pretty and edible layers as they go.

Kids over 7 years old have even more craft options to choose from, as they can decorate Picture Frames, Masks, Crowns or Door Hangers with various forms of candy to make their own unique design. They can also recreate cool images with the sweet stuff by making their own Candy Mosaic.

Once the crafts are done, it is time for Candy-themed games for some good old-fashioned birthday party fun. For kids ages 3 and up, LicoRice Limbo and Candy Bingo are sweet updates on classic party games that are even more fun with a sugar rush.

Children ages 5 and over have even more choices of games that make use of physical, mental, and Kobayashi-esque eating skills. On the physical side is the Jawbreaker Relay, where teams relay race with a 1-pound jawbreaker. Meanwhile, Candymonium is a combined treasure hunt and candy relay race all in one.

On the mental side is the Estimation Bowl, where children must guess the amount of candy the bowl contains.

Finally, though not exactly physical or mental, the LicoRice Race is also popular, as teams race to eat an extra long piece of licoRice. Could the future Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Champ be in training at your shindig?

Kids over 8 years old also have some great age-appropriate games to play at candy themed parties. Musical Dares is an updated twist on musical chairs but with a dare to eat a gross candy if left chairless. There are also the games Name that Candy, a Warhead Contest and an Atomic Fireball Contest.

Once the crafts are completed and the games have been played, it is time to bring on the sweet treats. Sure, there is the traditional birthday cake and ice cream, but parents who want their child's birthday party to be the one the kids will talk about all year long can take things up a notch with something really special. Carnival style cotton candy or vintage popcorn machines are always popular options to add some nostalgia to any party. Or, for a more Willy Wonka themed take, a Chocolate Waterfall provides a multi-tiered magical chocolate river of dark, milk or Belgian varieties for guests to dip pretzels or marshmallow skewers in.

Parents who want a more traditional dessert element for their candy themed party have some excellent choices with a Dessert Buffet of Rice krispy treats, cupcakes, cookies, brownies and fudge, or an Ice Cream Sundae Bar, where guests can create their own sundaes. They can also opt to have a Candy Bar on the Go where guests can mix and match their favorites for a party favor that everyone will love.

Candy themed parties are simple to plan and even easier to host, as no matter what a person's age is, the appeal of the sweet stuff is universal. All is takes is a little Willy Wonka-like imagination to put together a candy themed party that will be a hit with guests young and old.

Sesame Seeds - Black, White, and Red Included

Sesame are generally known as the seeds from the sesame herb. This is the most used seed globally and is a main source of inclusion in foods in the Middle East. Sesame foods such as tahini and halva originated from there.

Sesame seeds are often used in breads dishes and sprinkled on both sweet and savoury dishes. The sesame herb can be eaten raw, dried, or roasted or cooked with all kinds of foods, it is entirely versatile. It contains amino acids and this has been proven benefits for a healthy body.

In the Middle East sesame seeds are regarded as the seeds of immortality. Rich in over 50% of oil it also contains 20 percent protein and beneficial vitamins, A, B and E. Its mineral elements contain a high Zinc content, alongside calcium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium.

Sesame as a result are an excellent source of calcium and would benefit in a natural calcium supplement for those who can't drink milk from cows. The seeds have also been found to give a mild antioxidant effect. They possess a skin softening agent and are used as nourishing tonics as well as a laxative.

There are three varieties of sesame, the black seed, white seed and red seed.

* The black seeds yields the best oil and also most appropriate for medicinal purposes.

* The white seeded sesame is used for its calcium content

* The red seeds are rich in iron is used in foods that lack iron.

The oil is highly praised for its medicinal value and used in Indian food as it has a fine flavor and high boiling point which is characteristic of Indian food.

The use of sesame seeds in sweet meats or as a ground paste with water and butter to treat hemorrhoids. Externally it is an excellent remedy for ulcers, burns and scalds. In addition the sesame seed cures dysentery and diarrhea problems as well as respiratory and menstrual disorders.

The seeds should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. This will be fine for up to 3 months or refrigerated up to 6 months. They can of course be frozen and will keep for a year.

Vital PSP+ - Certified Vegan Highly Concentrated Nutritional Supplement From Ancient Strains of Rice

Vital PSP+ is a highly concentrated form of functional nutrients that may help to increase carbohydrate metabolism to provide energy to the brain at the cellular level. Specifically, it contains poly saccharide peptides (PSPs) that may increase digestive processes to improve absorption and metabolism of carbohydrates and other nutrients to promote not only brain health but overall health. They may also increase efficiency of metabolic processes to increase the ability of the body to naturally detoxify itself which will in turn, boost the immune system as well as functioning of many organ systems. Vital PSP+ is a unique product in that it is made using whole food processing to preserve all of the nutritional value.

What is Vital PSP+ Made From?

This highly concentrated nutritional supplement is made from a rare strain of Rice that has been in use by native peoples for centuries. Unlike other Rice products, it is a non-GMO (genetically modified organism) that is used in its entirely natural state. The poly saccharide peptides contained in Vital PSP+ provide brain fuel. It also contains amino acids with carbon groups that can be converted into glucose for immediate energy in the brain. The Rice extract also provides health levels of vitamins, minerals and the ever-important antioxidants to support body functions and protect cells from damage.

Why Whole Food Processing?

Whole food processing is a system of using actual foods to concentrate nutrients. Whole food methods use carefully designed systems to avoid heat and other synthetic processes, preserving nutritional value of supplements in a natural method. Many nutritional supplement manufacturers produce single ingredient products using artificial methods with chemical processes and high heat systems. These artificial processes actually work to destroy nutritional value and do not provide the myriad of other phytonutrients that can be obtained by using whole food methods.

Why is Vital PSP+ Better?

The natural, organic Rice that provides the nutritional benefits of Vital PSP+ is not only an ancient grain, it is grown in an ancient place that has long been known to revere health. The Siam Valley, located in Thailand is known to have some of the most nutrient rich soil in the world. The nutrients packed within the soil are transferred to the naturally grown rice to provide a higher quality base for whole food supplementation. In addition, the growing environment including near equatorial sun along with a moisture laden environment, results in the most nutrient packed rice strain available but who can travel to Thailand to get rice? Vital PSP+ provides all of the benefits of this ancient nutritional product in a convenient package.

Decorating Xmas Trees With Cookies and Candy

Decorating xmas trees with cookies and candy is a great way to give your tree that personal touch. It is creative and the results can be astounding in terms of their creative impact. Decorating an
artificial tree with baked goods is one way to make it look more homey and real. A slim christmas tree really looks great with decorations made out of slim wrapped candies. The snowy color of
shortbread confections also plays off nicely against any color of tree including the artificial white christmas tree.

Decorating xmas trees with food goes back to the times before Christ was born. Offerings of food were often placed along sills and windows to feed the good spirits and protect from the evil ones. The first
christmas trees were in fact imitations of the pyramid shape of real conifers. The custom of placing pickles and other foods on the steps of cedar pyramids of wood that were hand constructed was very common in Germany before the 16th century. It wasn't until Martin Luther came along and presented the upright tree that was brought indoors and lit with candles that we became familiar with the Christmas tree that we know today.

Using food as adornments on evergreen boughs is a time-honored tradition. Perhaps the strangest one is the German custom of hanging pickles on the tree. Today you can buy German ornaments made of glass that feature pickle cartoon characters wearing tiny Santa hats.

Decorating xmas trees with shortbread and ginger bread men is also a tradition that came out of Germanic and Slavic cultures. Of course today you can buy all kinds of different cookie cutters that
certainly pique one's creativity when it comes to making edible xmas decorations. Popular cookie cutter shapes are Christmas stockings, Santa, reindeer, presents and stars. However you could also decorate your tree with shortbread or gingerbread cut into any shape you like.

There are some really interesting novelty cookie cutters on the market including ones shaped like nativity scenes. One nice idea might be to decorate your tree with heart shaped cookies. You could
also make one very large angel, decorate it with edible gold and glitter and use it as a tree topper.

Decorating xmas trees with candies can be even more fun. You can hang single candies from a tree - such as lollipops and foil wrapped chocolates. Toffees wrapped in foil look especially nice on a tall
slim christmas tree. Candies can also be glued together in sunburst shapes to make interesting decorations or even strung together to make a long, shiny and delicious garland.

It is also very easy to make xmas tree decorations using pins and Styrofoam balls or backing. Simply spray the Styrofoam balls with green gold or silver and pin the candies so that they cover the
surface of the ball. A similar idea comes from Martha Stewart who does the same with gumdrops and miniature marshmallows. You could also use candied fruit. In fact one age old xmas decoration is the
oranges that is stuck with cloves and hung from the tree. In theory you could also use oranges as the base for any type of home made candy ornament.

One idea is to create a tree topper for your xmas tree using peppermint candy canes. This involves gluing them onto a round Styrofoam ball so that they radiate from the center in the circle. The same thing can be done with gumdrops on toothpicks and lollipops.

By the way, the candy cane is one of the most potent of Christmas symbols and it is actually a symbol of Jesus. A candy maker invented them in Indiana in the late 1800's. He came up with the idea of
bending a plain white peppermint stick. The color white symbolizes the purity and sinless nature of Jesus. The three small stripes to symbolize the pain Christ on the cross. The reason there are three is
because they represent the Holy Trinity. The one bold stripe represents the blood of Jesus. Right side up it looks like a shepherd's staff because Jesus is the shepherd of man. Upside down, it becomes the letter J symbolizing the first letter in Jesus' name. So candy canes are more than just pretty confections. They have quite a serious meaning.

When it comes to decorating xmas trees, one cannot say enough about popcorn. Popcorn is one of the most versatile of xmas tree decorations. Most traditional is the xmas tree garland that is strung
with the popped kernels. Popcorn balls that are dyed with food coloring also make very attractive christmas tree decorations. Left white, however, these popcorn balls look like snowballs hanging on
your tree.

Christmas tree garlands can also be made out of any kind of berries. Cranberries and holly berries (not edible!) make especially nice garlands because of their festive red color.

Some years, cereal companies also put out cereal in Christmas colors such as red and green. These types of cereals can also be made into shapes using a Rice Krispy Square recipe and hung by a thread.

Another unique idea is to decorate your christmas tree with homemade candy apples. These bright glossy red treats look absolutely fantastic, especially on a white or green tree. A nice compliment to
the color of the candy apples would be gold chocolate coins or foil covered chocolates in the shape of Santa also strung on the tree. A starburst of candy apples would make a stunning tree topper for a
slim christmas tree.

When decorating xmas trees with candy and baked goods remember that your success is only as limited as your imagination. If you are stuck for ideas, Martha Stewart's cookbooks are an excellent source of inspiration. You can also get great ideas on the Internet and by searching traditional xmas tree sites to get ideas about how these decorations are supposed to look.

What To Do When You Have Stomach Flu

It seems as though every time we get sick we think we have to go to the doctor. In some instances you may need to go to the doctor, and if you are dehydrated from the stomach flu, you should go to the hospital for re-hydration. The following are some tips and tricks that you can do at home to help you feel better when you have diarrhea. In the last 20 years or so our society has shied away from using home remedies, but truly these things do work and have worked for hundreds of years.

When you have diarrhea, you want to make sure you are getting plenty of liquids down your body. Fast from solid foods for 36 hours (a night, a day, and a night). Drink plenty of liquids - dilute fruit and vegetable juices with filtered water to maintain your hydration.

Foods to avoid:

Milk and milk products: butter, cheese, ice cream etc.

Sweetened fruit juices

Sugar, including honey

High protein foods: meat, eggs, nuts and seeds

Fats: especially fried or greasy food

Any gluten containing grains: wheat, rye, barley and oats

Artificial sweeteners: mannitol, sorbitol, aspartame and sucralose

Foods to eat:

Ripe bananas (mashed)

Rice bran

Raw vegetables (high fiber)

Carrot soup

Rice and Rice cereals

Toast (plain)

Acidophilus

Papaya juice

Applesauce or grated green apples

Carob and amaranth powder (rich in pectin): mix 1-Tablespoon Carob or amaranth powder in 1 cup of applesauce, water or Rice milk. (Carob is really good at helping to stop diarrhea).

Carrot and cabbage juice

Powdered cinnamon: use ¼ teaspoon in applesauce or as a tea.

When you take your own health into your own hands, you can do amazing things. If you get the stomach flu or are affected by diarrhea, try a few of the tips and help yourself get well and back into your normal daily routine.

cutting the cake

After Amanda's wedding ceremony, cutting the Rice-Crispy treat cake! Chocolate, and regular of course! The ceremony was held at Amanda's [now] husband Sean's family campground, and was a very beautiful...but HOT day! Not a single cloud in the sky, and 85-90 degree weather! O: Had they had a traditional cake...it would have melted in the heat!

Wisconsin Dells Is A Fun Family Vacation Destination

Rice krispie treats

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin is a fun destination for a family vacation, and with a little research and advance planning the trip doesn't have to make your wallet cry out in pain.

Wisconsin Dells (and the area is really two towns: Wisconsin Dells and Lake Delton) has been a popular summer vacation destination for people who live in the Midwest since the late 1800's. In recent years, several indoor water parks have been built making Wisconsin Dells a popular year around vacation destination, not only for people who live in the Midwest but for people from around the world.

What first drew tourists to the Wisconsin Dells area? It was the scenery. The Wisconsin River meanders through the Wisconsin Dells area and has beautiful sandstone rock formations. A trip to Wisconsin Dells wouldn't be complete without a boat tour of those rock formations.

There are two basic choices of tours; either boat tour or a "duck" tour which also includes some sightseeing on the land. If you have small children, they'll enjoy the "duck" tour the most.

If you take a boat tour, you'll have a couple of options. You'll be able to take an "upper Dells" tour, a "lower Dells" tour, or both. The upper Dells boat tour lasts about 2 hours and the lower Dells boat tour lasts about 1 hour. The upper Dells tour includes a few shore stops to look at some outstanding landmarks.

The "duck" tour is a combination land and water tour. It's a really fun way to see some of the beautiful scenery on the land and water. And the tour is a big hit with kids of all ages! My family takes a trip to Wisconsin Dells nearly every year and we go on the Duck tour almost every trip because we find it so much fun. The "duck" vehicles used for the tours are amphibious vehicles used in WWII that have been revamped. The tour starts out on dry land. During the tour you'll be taken down streets of Wisconsin Dells; through lovely wooded areas where wildlife is often seen (we usually see white-tail deer) and then it's on to the really fun part of the trip.

The duck driver drives into the water with a big splash - well; usually with a big splash. The driver will ask the customers if they want to go into the water slow or fast because fast gets some of the people wet. On every tour I've been on the fast trip into the water has won the vote and it is fun! After the twists and turns of the wooded trails (some of them steep and narrow, but always safe) the water part of the trip is a nice change of pace. After being in the water for a while and seeing some of the breathtaking sandstone rock formations, your driver takes you back onto dry land and your fun tour is complete. During the entire tour your driver entertains you with a funny and informative narrative.

Even though our family loves going on the Duck tour when we go to Wisconsin Dells, if they have a choice of only one activity to do, going to a water park wins hands down. There are over 20 water parks in Wisconsin Dells. There are outdoor water parks; indoor water parks; and combination indoor/outdoor water parks. So no matter what time of the year you want to splash in the water and have fun you can do it in Wisconsin Dells.

Our family usually takes a summer trip to Wisconsin Dells. And with mid-summer temperatures in the 90's, and even occasionally in the 100's, splashing in the water is very refreshing. Our family's favorite outdoor water park is Noah's Ark. It's currently the largest outdoor water park in Wisconsin Dells. You can easily spend an entire day there and not get bored. I have a few tips for you though if you do go to Noah's Ark (or any of the water parks in Wisconsin Dells) to help keep your costs down and to make the trip as enjoyable as possible.

1) If at all possible, don't buy your admission tickets at the front gate the day you want to go to the park. You'll pay full pRice and there are lots of ways to find discounted tickets. If you live in the Midwest check with your local Parks and Recreation Department to see if they have discounted tickets available. Also check with your place of employment to see if they offer discounted tickets. An Internet search may also give you sources for discounted tickets. Another option is to go into downtown Wisconsin Dells or Lake Delton before you go to Noah's Ark and stop at one of the ticket booths there. You can almost always purchase discounted tickets there, especially if you are planning to do more than one activity while you are in Wisconsin Dells. For example if you are planning to go to a water park, take a duck tour, go to a water show, and go to one of the amusement parks to ride on the roller coasters and go-karts you can get some pretty good discounts by buying all your tickets at the same time.

2) Take waterproof sunscreen. You're going to be in and out of the water all day so make sure you have waterproof sunscreen in order to avoid having to constantly reapply your sunscreen throughout the day.

3) Take towels. It may seem like a silly item to list but it's surprising how many people forget to take a towel. You can purchase beach towels inside the water parks but they are expensive.

3) Consider renting a locker in the park. There are locker rentals available in the park for a nominal fee. I always rent a locker and put dry clothes for my family in the locker along with the things I don't want to carry around all day, such as my sunscreen. At the end of the day we retrieve those dry clothes and change into

4) Take plastic bags for your wet swimsuits and towels.

5) Take a small waterproof container for extra money. Get one that attaches to your wrist or hangs around your neck. If you don't have one or don't know where to buy one, you can purchase one inexpensively at one of the stores inside the water park.

6) Bring your own lunch. There are several covered picnic areas inside the water park available free of charge for your use although it's likely some of them will be unavailable on any given day because they will be reserved for groups who are at the park. Even if you don't want to pack a cooler at home, bring along the empty cooler and pick up your lunch items from a store the day before. Although there is good food available inside the water park, it is expensive and will quickly put a big dent in your pocketbook.

7) Bring water shoes. Sandals are okay too but you want ones that are water friendly which typically means flip-flops and those can easily fall off your feet when you're on some of the rides. I don't advise going barefoot. The park is paved and if it's a sunny day the pavement gets very hot.

8) Go on rides early in the day and late in the day. That's when the lines are the shortest. The lines are really long in the middle of the day. Have your picnic lunch at that time, do a little browsing in the water park stores, and take a short rest before heading back on the rides.

Going on the ducks or a boat tour and going to a water park aren't the only activities to do in the Wisconsin Dells area. You could stay busy for weeks (if your pocketbook could handle it) doing all the activities available to you. You could go horseback riding; go-carting; riding on roller coasters; shopping; take in the Tommy Bartlet water show; play miniature golf; play regular golf on one of the golf courses; rent a boat and go fishing (you'll need to purchase a Wisconsin fishing license); rent a canoe and go canoeing; enjoy a movie at the drive-in movie theater; rent a jet-ski; visit the railway museum; visit the history center; play paintball; or do any of the dozens of other available activities. You could even take a short drive to Baraboo and watch the Al Ringling circus. There are literally hundreds of things to do in the Wisconsin Dells area.

I have one more thing to keep in mind as you are planning your trip to Wisconsin Dells. August is the busiest month in Wisconsin Dells. How busy? Consider this: Lake Delton and Wisconsin Dells have a combined year-round population of around 5,000 people. During the weekends in August, the population in the Lake Delton/Wisconsin Dells area can swell to more than 200,000 people. Lines at the attractions will be the longest in August and the hotels will be booked solid (I don't mean to scare you though. Our family usually goes in August even though we know it's going to be busy and we have a great time). Book your hotel early or consider going there at another time during the summer. June isn't as busy but the weather may not be as warm either which means it could be a little chilly if you're going to be visiting one of the outdoor water parks.
