Keep Your Dog Healthy With These 3 Breakfast Treat Recipes

Rice krispie treats

You can easily create healthy, helpful cuisine for you dog in your own kitchen. Here are 3 breakfast treat recipes for you to try.

Breakfast Treat One, Oinkers and Omelettes

Ingredients

3 eggs, 8 mini turkey sausages, 1 package refrigerated crescent rolls.

Preparation & Cooking

Unroll the crescent dough and separate into 8 rectangles on a greased cookie sheet. Cook eggs for 3 minutes in microwave safe bowl, stirring each minute. When eggs are done, scoop small spoonfuls into the centre of each crescent rectangle. Top with a turkey sausage. Fold remaining crescent dough over eggs and sausage to make neat package, OR bundle excess dough and flare edges to create small sacks of goodies. Bake according to crescent roll instructions and allow to cool thoroughly.

Store extras in the refrigerator until your pup is ready to eat them (but don't ask him, he'll always be ready to eat them).

The crescent rolls in these snacks package the eggs and sausage in a small, easy-to-handle treat. These are so neat and tidy you can zip them in a baggie and take them to the dog park for a protein burst.

Breakfast Treat Two, Trail Mix Bescotti

Ingredients

100 ml (1/3 cup) unsalted butter

200 ml (3/4 cup) sugar

2 eggs

10 ml (2 tsp) grated orange zest

530 ml (2 1/4 cups) whole wheat flour

10 ml (1 1/2 tsp) baking powder

1 ml (1/4 tsp) salt

20 ml (1 1/2 T) sunflower oil

20 ml (1 1/2 T) honey

250 ml (1 cup) oatmeal

Preparation & Cooking

Trail Mix Spread oatmeal on microwave-safe shallow dish. Microwave oil and honey on high for 30 seconds, then pour over oatmeal and stir until completely combined. Microwave on high for 7 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes.

Biscotti. Cream the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl until fluffy. Add eggs and orange zest. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in separate bowl, then beat into the butter mixture. Slowly fold in trail mix. Divide the dough in half and form two logs on cookie sheet, each measuring ½ inch thick, 1 ½ inch wide, and 12 inches long. Space two inches apart and bake at 160ºC (325ºF) for 25 minutes (or until golden). Let cool for five minutes then cut ½ inch wide slices at 45 degree angles. Bake for 5 minutes, turn cookies over then bake for another 5 minutes. Let cool.
Pay close attention to oats to prevent burning.

The addition of natural oils and oats in this biscotti recipe makes for an even healthier treat. The oil contributes to your dog's shiny coat and aids in digestion, while the oats are a hearty addition to his diet.

Breakfast Treat Three, Peanut Butter and Oatmeal Chunks.

Ingredients

60 ml (1/4 cup) natural peanut butter

60 ml (1/4 cup) honey

120 ml (1/2 cup) nonfat dry milk

60 ml (1/4 cup) Rice Krispies

120 ml (1/2 cup) crushed almonds

Place them on a wax paper-coated cookie sheet and chill in the refrigerator for an hour. Keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.

Controlling Your Gout With a Low Purine Meal Plan

Rice krispie treats

If you suffer from gout you likely know how important it is to eliminate high purine foods from your diet. Changing your lifestyle and eating habits is key to keeping your gout at bay.

Controlling your gout with a low purine meal plan is among the best ways you can minimize your bouts of painful gout. You should speak with your doctor and a nutritionist to set up a meal plan that is best for your dietary needs.

In many situations it is necessary to control gout with a combination of medication and a new diet plan, however in many cases where gout is bothersome it is completely possible to control it with only modifications to your diet. Here is a diet you can use as an example for planing your daily meals to ensure your gout does not flare up and cause you unnecessary pain.

Breakfast

- A bowl of cereal (Rice Krispies, Cornflakes or similar)
- Skim milk for the cereal
- A piece toast (wholemeal) lightly buttered with olive oil type spreads
- 1 cup of coffee or tea (must be on the weak side)

Lunch

- A sandwich on wholemeal bread. Choice of thinly sliced chicken, ham, turkey or peanut butter

- Cauliflower or carrots
- Glass of water

Snacks

- A piece of fruit
- Veggie mixture (carrots, celery etc.)
- 2 wheat biscuits
- Fresh berries or melon

Here are some of the foods that you should avoid because they are high in purines. This list is not complete, it is merely to give you an idea of the foods you should avoid if you have gout.

* heart
* sweet breads
* kidney
* liver
* shrimp
* anchovies
* whitebait
* crab
* sprats
* sardines
* herring
* fish roe
* mackerel

It is wise for you to make a list of the foods you can not or should not consume to take with you to the grocery store. This is a great way for you to ensure you are not buying foods that will aggravate your gout and cause you a painful attack.

Kong Mini Stuff 'N Puppy Snaps - Healthy Treats That Make Dogs Think

Mini Stuff 'N Puppy Snaps: Busy Time Treats by Kong

Dog biscuits are a great option that many dogs love. Kong has created a line of biscuit treats that are designed for use with their Kong toys. These delicious dog cookies are a great way to keep canine minds busy and engaged. The scent and flavor of natural chicken and Rice makes these a sure favorite your young canine companion will enjoy.

Health Overview of Kong's Stuff 'N Puppy Snaps

Stuff N' Puppy Snaps are a great way to keep young dog's busy while removing build up on teeth. When used with a Kong toy, the rubber helps remove debris from between teeth. The biscuits themselves are made of natural ingredients. Corn and wheat are not used, making these tasty dog treats ideal for all canines, even those who suffer from allergies.

Manufacturer Snapshot: Kong Company

Kong is a well known name among pet owners. What is not so well known is that this company began with a German shepherd. Owner Joe Markham found that his former police dog named Fritz had an obsession with chewing rocks. This in turn damaged his teeth, which frustrated his owners. While working on his Volkswagen Van, Markham saw Fritz chewing rocks yet again. With nothing else that seemed to work, Markham decided to throw car parts near Fritz as a way to distract him. Nothing worked until an oddly shaped suspension part finally caught the dog's eye. This was the very first version of the Kong toy available to all pet owners today.

How to Create Healthy Party Snacks For Kids That They Will Eat

Rice krispie treats

Finding the right balance of healthy food that kids will eat at parties can be quite a challenge, particularly with the popularity and brand recognition of fast foods. However, with a bit of creativity and effort you can make healthy food look appetizing and fun to eat and here are a few tips.

Instead of serving bread with hundreds and thousands/sprinkles on it, make a variety of sandwiches with different fillings, for example cheese, ham, tuna, egg, cheese and tomato or tuna and sweet corn. Small, quality sausages, such as chipolatas are also an excellent addition to any party and popular with children. The children are more likely to eat these if you present them in a fun way.

Instead of lots of chocolate, place dried fruit on toothpicks, ensuring that you use a variety off different colors to make it look fun. You can also have muesli bars and you can buy carob coated Rice cakes. You could also make carob coated chocolate Rice krispies treats. You can use cornflakes as a wheat free alternative but please ensure that you check the package in case of children with allergies.

If you want to offer vegetarian, dairy free or wheat/gluten free party food, then here are a few different ideas for you to try:-

o If you are able to locate them, Scottish oatcakes (some oatcakes may contain wheat or gluten - check the packages for further details) are an excellent choice served with tuna and sweet corn.

o For a sweet idea, Rice cakes with a carob chocolate topping or for a savory idea, you could add some cheese, pineapple, aubergine (eggplant) or a variety of pureed vegetables. Make sure that these are colorful to attract the children's eye.

o You can add cheese to muffins (you can make these gluten free) and place them under the grill. Try placing some fruit and shredded zucchini (courgette) inside them also. You can also make them into little pizzas and get the party boy/girl to help you make them.

o Waffles are also another good idea (these may not be gluten free though) and you can add all sorts of things, for example pureed fruits as a sweet alternative or freshly cooked beans as a savory topping.

o Tofu (bean curd) can also be used, although to make this attractive to children, you will need to ensure that you serve it in an interesting way. One way to do this is to slice the tofu finely and then dip it into some beaten up egg. Then add some sesame seeds and shallow fry it, serving it hot. The adults may prefer this but nothing ventured nothing gained!

o Home made pizzas cut into small rectangles, so that the children can eat them easily. You can add all sorts of different flavors and pineapple and cheese, tomato and cheese, or grated vegetables and cheese are excellent vegetarian choices. If you have someone at the party who cannot eat wheat or is a strict vegan, you can then add soya cheese and use wheat free dough. You can ask the party girl/boy to help you make them into funny faces. Getting the children involved with what you are doing is always a great idea, since they will then enjoy their party more as they have participated in the food preparation.

o You can also offer a variety of foods on a stick, for example cheese or fruit cubes.

o Falafels (a Lebanese delicacy made with chick peas).

o Rice crackers or pitta bread served with hummous and avocado dip, with carrot, zucchini and celery.

Traditional Birthday Cakes and Their Alternatives

Rice krispie treats

One of the first things that comes to mind when you think of a birthday celebration is the cake. It is often the focal point of the table. When planning a celebration, you have more cake design options than you would ever imagine. It would be easy to feel overwhelmed when choosing a cake. You can simplify the process by following a few simple suggestions.

First, you need to decide the theme of your party. If you are buying the cake from a bakery or ordering it from a professional baker, you need to know how large you want the cake to be, how many people you plan to serve, and the pRice range you want to stay within. Ask them what designs are available related to the party theme you chose. You definitely need to plan ahead and order your cake in an appropriate time frame.

If you plan to bake the cake yourself, you can find recipes and decorating ideas online and in almost any cookbook. Some designs will require special pans while others can be made in the standard round, square, or 9 X 13 cake pan. If decorating a cake is a new experience for you, staying with a simple design will make the process less stressful. As an alternative to decorating a large or multi-layer cake, you might opt for decorating cupcakes instead.

Some children do not actually like cake and would prefer some other option. An ice cream cake is a popular alternative to the traditional decorated cake with lots of icing and candles. You can special order ice cream cakes just as you would a standard cake. Or, you can mold the ice cream yourself into various shapes that match the theme of the party.

A large sugar cookie can be decorated to take the place of a standard cake. You can add candy pieces, icing, sprinkles, or numerous other toppings to create a uniquely personal cookie. You can also make smaller cookies to serve the guests. You could decorate the small cookies in a more simple manner, but in a design that matches the large cookie.

Some children prefer pies such as strawberry, chocolate, or lemon to cake. Their favorite pie decorated with candles would surely make them smile. Brownies, ice cream sundaes, pudding cups, a cheesecake, or decorated Rice Krispie treats are all possible cake alternatives to consider. Another uniquely creative birthday cake alternative would be a popcorn cake as the centerpiece for the table with smaller popcorn balls for individual guests.

Top 7 Tips To Treat And Prevent Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is also known as colitis or spastic colon. This syndrome is a chronic intestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain and cramps, constipation, and diarrhea. Flare-ups can usually be traced to something you have eaten. Among the most common triggers are milk and dairy products, spicy foods, fatty foods, and gas-producing foods such as beans, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. The frequency and intensity of flare-ups can vary greatly from one person to the next. Some folks barely notice their symptoms, while others must cope with crushing pain as well as urgent trips to the bathroom. Here are some tips that you can consider to adopt to get relief fast.

1. Mind Your Dining

Take your meals without distraction, worries, and interruptions. The idea is to focus on your eating. If your attention is drawn to something besides your food, you can develop indigestion, gas, bloating, and cramping.

2. Learn To Relax

Since stress can make the irritable bowel syndrome even worse, learning to take it easy may ease your discomfort. In particular, if you are a Type A personality, aim for an A-minus instead. Relaxation tapes can help, as can books on coping and stress-management techniques.

3. Think Small

Feasting on a five-course spread can tax your intestines and lead to cramping and diarrhea. So eat smaller but more frequent meals, say, six mini-meals spread throughout the day rather than the standard three squares or switch to smaller portions.

4. Takes Notes

Keeping a food diary can help you detect the dietary sources of your irritable bowel syndrome flare-ups. If you begin to notice a pattern pointing to a potential culprit, eliminate the particular food from your diet and see if your symptoms disappear as well.

5. Don't Forgo Fiber

Perhaps the last thing you would think of feeding an angry bowel is fiber. Yet a high-fiber diet can actually help relieve the intestinal spasms of irritable bowel syndrome by slightly distending the colon it may also relieve constipation, another irritable bowel syndrome, by retaining water in the stool. To increase your fiber intake, it is recommended to addmore whole-grain breads and cereals and more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. You can also take a fiber supplement. Be aware that eating more fiber can temporarily aggravate irritable bowel syndrome by producing more gas. This usually subsides in just a few weeks.

6. Capitalize On Carbs

Fill your diet with complex carbohydrates such as pasta, Rice, fruits, and vegetables, while trimming the fat as much as possible. Fatty foods, especially meats, can send your intestinal into spasms.

7. Be Aware Of Dairy

Many people develop twitchy bowels because they cannot digest lactose, the sugar in milk. You might try to give up milk and milk products for a while to see if your symptoms clear up. If you just cannot bear the thought of sitting down to a bowl of dry cereal in the morning, consider taking a lactase supplement instead. You can purchase this product in grocery and drugstores.

Ten Cool Things to Do With Cookie Cutters

Rice krispie treats

A simple cookie cutter doesn't seem like it would have many uses other than to cut out a cookie, but if you have a basket or drawer full of wonderfully shaped cookie, don't keep them stashed away for a day of baking. Break them out and use them for anything from decorating to children's craft projects. We've put together several great ways to put your cookie to good use all year round.

1. Use your favorite to decorate your kitchen. You can display them on a plate rail or mount them directly to the wall in a pattern for a bit of rustic, down-home charm. You might also consider suspending one or two in each window from a thin strand of wire or twine. If you have curtains in your kitchen, slip a cookie cutter onto each tie back. If you're handy with tools, you can even use several cookie cutters to replace the current knobs on your kitchen cabinets.

2. Create a shadow box for your favorite cook and include a favorite recipe written in beautiful script, a cookie, a few miniature utensils and whatever else strikes your fancy. This makes a wonderful house warming gift for someone who loves to bake.

3. The holidays give you lots of options for using cutters creatively. Tie a single cookie cutter onto each present in place of a gift tag. Choose that represent the person receiving the gift. For example, try an apple cookie cutter for your child's teacher, a megaphone for your cheerleader daughter and a cartoon favorite for your son.

If you're giving a plate of cookies to someone this holiday season, add a finishing touch that will make it truly unique. Wrap the cookies in cellophane and tie it with a bright bow. String along with a card containing the recipe for the cookies so they can make more any time they like.

4. Don't just use your cookie cutters for cookies. Lie out some cookie cutters upside down on a cookie sheet and then pack them with fudge or Rice Krispy treats and allow to harden. When the candy is set just pop the cookie cutter full of yummy goodness into a bag and finish up with a ribbon. These are great party favors for a children's party.

5. Decorate a holiday wreath with candy canes, cinnamon sticks, small measuring spoons and a few Christmas cutters and then finish it off with a gingham bow for a sweet wreath that your friends will love.

6. You can use your cutters in lots of way to entertain children. Simply stringing a few plastic on a length of soft ribbon gives you a cheerful rattle babies will love. As they grow older, teach them what each shape is as a learning tool. You can also keep a box or drawer filled with plastic cutters for little fingers to play with while you're cooking dinner.

7. Cookie cutters are wonderful for creative Play-Doh activities. Let your kids cut out their own set of animals, shapes and letters for hours of fun.

8. Cookie cutters are great for budding artists. Show your kids how to carefully trace around the outside edge and then fill in the details and color themselves.

9. Take cookie cuters to the beach. A stretch of wet sand is the perfect location to create sand art with an assortment of cutters.

10. Make your kids extra-special pancakes for their birthday, Christmas or just because. When you have the pancake batter ready, pour it into a metal that's been placed on the hot griddle. To prevent sticking, spray the edge and inside of the cookie with a non-stick vegetable spray. Keep the cutter on just until the pancake batter is set but not completely cooked. Lift off the cutter and flip the pancake. Your kids will love a plateful of Santa, kitten or dinosaur pancakes!

How to Treat an Eczema Wheat Allergy

Like most eczema reactions, the way to cure and reverse the damage is simply by avoiding the substance that causes a flare up. However, with wheat, it can be a lot easier said than done. After all, wheat is in a lot of the mainstream foods served in restaurants, at grocery stores and over friend and family gatherings. So how do you avoid it?

The key is to be prepared. If someone offers you food, if you are hungry and have nothing else to eat, you are likely going to eat it. It's simply human nature! No one wants to go hungry, even when the foods being eaten might not be the best for health purposes. It happens all the time. Whenever a family gathering or company event is taking place, this is bound to happen.

The solution is to bring your own alternatives and have them planned out for the day. If you have a cooler full of healthy food you know your body won't react to, in particular wheat free and allergen free food, you won't have a problem with being forced to eat foods that flare up your eczema. It's as simple as that.

As far as wheat substitutes go, the best ones are Rice flour, potato based starches and breads, and rye based breads. It can be fairly difficult to recognize these foods when you first start looking for the at the grocery store, but consult a dermatologist for the best recommendations in order to avoid exposure to wheat and other harmful allergens.

Make sure your meals are planned out in advance, especially if you are on the go. Bring wheat substitutes to any occasion and have them packed so you don't need to explain yourself to your friends and family. Just let them know you have an allergy to wheat and need your own source of starch that won't affect your skin!

Simple Italian Cooking - The Best Eggplant Parmesan Recipe

My wife and I tend to get disappointed when we dine out anymore. Other than a choice few restaurants we dine in the vast majority of the time. We do this a lot because I know I can make it better and healthier at home in my own kitchen. Having managed Italian restaurants in the past, I have come to enjoy simple Italian cooking and have come up with what my wife, family, and friends consider to be the best eggplant Parmesan recipe ever! Couple this recipe with a simple roasted red pepper sauce and a simple pasta side dish and I guarantee a meal better than most of the Italian restaurants in town!

Parmesan Ingredients
1 -- Eggplant. You are looking for the best cylindrical shape you can here.
2 -- Large Eggs
1 and half -- Cups Italian Bread Crumbs
1- Cup all purpose flour
18 -- Slices Mozzarella Cheese (the fresher the better)
2 -- Tablespoons water
1/2 -- Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1/2 -- Cup Parmesan Cheese

Sauce Ingredients
1 -- Red Bell Pepper
1 -- 16oz Can Diced Tomatoes
1/4 -- Cup Chopped, Fresh Basil
2 -- Teaspoons Dried Oregano

Putting it All Together
Halve and deseed the red bell pepper. Brush the surface of both halves lightly with olive oil. Place under a broiler until the skin starts to char (do not blacken!) and bubble.

Roughly chop the pepper and place in a blender with the diced tomatoes, half of the basil, and the oregano. Blend until well mixed and then place in a sauce pan, covered under low heat.

Heat olive oil in a deep frying pan until hot enough to pop a small drop of water (safely). Preheat oven to 425. Wash and slice the eggplant into quarter inch or thinner rounds. Vigorously mix the eggs with the water to make a "wash". Put flour and bread crumbs into separate, "dredgeable" pans (I use pie pans).

Dredge the eggplant first through the flour, egg wash, and the bread crumbs (follow this order). Fry the eggplant in the hot olive oil and set aside on paper towels when lightly browned.

In a baking dish put a light coat of the sauce you were heating on the bottom. Stack the eggplant and the Parmesan alternately (Should be about 3-4 rounds high with eggplant on top). Place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes or until cheese has melted and bubbly.

Serve lightly covered with sauce and garnished with Parmesan and basil. You should be able to yield 6 servings and have some eggplant left over that you can slice thinly, fry, and toss with freshly grated Parmesan as an appetizer later.
