Dieting on the Holidays, Tips For Christmas

If you have been on a diet or maintaining your weight and you don't want to blow it during the holidays, here are some healthy holiday tips.

Can one meal of eating whatever you want really hurt you? The answer is yes. It does a couple of things. After you eat the big meal, it could make you feel sluggish, which will get you a little depressed, because you knew you should not have eaten that much. Then you could see a couple pound weight gain.

You should enjoy some of your favorite foods in moderation. You only live once, and the holidays are important. Don't try to totally diet, it could backfire and make you feel more stressed on the holidays. Treat yourself to good food, less fat, and moderation. Don't use January 1st as a date for watching you weight again. Watch you weight the day after the big holiday meal. Here are some tips for the holidays.

Don't bring home leftovers from the relatives house. That will not be a good idea. If you have leftovers, save just a little bit for your house. Give the rest to your company.

You can substitute some of your foods with less fat ingredients, or less fat items.

Instead of making a turkey, and using heavy stuffing, make Cornish Hens. They are like little chickens with a mild taste. Stuff it with Lipton-Knorr Chicken Rice - Rice Sides, a package Rice you prepare. When preparing only cook on stove so it is still pretty moist, when you stuff it in the hens, it will cook more in oven. When hens are almost done drizzle on top Ocean Spray can fruit, Crushed Fruit, it is in a container in the fruit isle that looks like a soft margarine plastic tub.

Instead of Green Bean Casserole, just make some of the steamable whole green bean variety bag and sprinkle 2% Parmesan cheese on top. Squash or yams baked with a little light margarine and cinnamon is also good. If you must have rolls, eat only one. Pillsbury make a reduced fat crescent rolls, that you bake.

Here are some kid friendly low fat desert ideas. Make Rice Krispie gift package treats. Make Rice Krispie Treats as indicated on back of cereal box. I only use 2 1/2 tbl of margarine not 3. Cut into small squares, take the peeling kind of red licorice, the string kind, and wrap around each side of treat and tie in a bow. Take a round plate and layer them around, put another set of treats , going in a little. Keep adding layers until only one will fit on top, and it should look like a tree.

Take fancy beverage glasses, and make Jell-o Parfaits, with sugar free Jell-o and lite Cool Whip. Use red and green Jell-o. Refer to Mykoodles.com for recipe.

If you are making cookies on the holidays, give some away as gifts. Only keep a few days worth in your house. Oatmeal raisin cookies are healthy, if you don't eat a lot. Peanut butter is a good source of protein, but is high in fat.

Rice Krispies Diet Recipe - Delicious Treats For the Calorie Counter on the Prowl For a Diet Recipe

If you are on a diet, you might be thinking to yourself "hey self, you know what I want? I want a delicious treat!" Well, here's the good news for you - I have a Rice Krispies diet recipe that I would love to share with you.

Find a pan to cook your wonderful little bars on. I use a 9x9 inch pan, but you may prefer a different size. Keep in mind, however, the proportions of ingredients I suggest are based off of this size of a pan. Spray this pan and your cooking spoon with your favorite cooking spray.

Next, mix together 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter and 1 quarter cup of light brown sugar. Make sure to cook in a saucepan, stirring nonstop, on medium heat for around 2 minutes, or until you notice that the sugar and butter are both melted. After these 2 minutes have passed, add a quarter teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Continue to stir this mixture.

While stirring, throw in 2 1/2 cups of mini marshmallows, and continue to mix your concoction until your marshmallows are completely melted. At this point you may toss in 4 1/2 cups of Rice Krispies, 1/2 cup of dice dried apricots, and 1/3 cup of toasted sliced almonds. Again, stir until all of your ingredients are evenly dispersed.

Transfer your mixture into your cooking pan, and put the pan in your refrigerator for around 30 minutes, give or take. After these 30 minutes have come and gone, slice your Rice Krispies diet recipe creation into however many slices you would like. I usually try to do 10.

Melt 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips in a pan at low heat. Add 2 teaspoons of canola oil and stir as your chocolate is melting. For an extra touch that I especially like, add 2 teaspoons of Grand Marnier into your melted chocolate, and you have a finished topping for your Rice Krispies.

Lather your treats with this topping and watch the chocolate flow along the sides of your bars. Once you have finished spreading your topping, simply allow the bars to cool by letting them sit, or by transferring them to wax paper to allow them to cool out in the open.

We just shared these treats at a Thanksgiving party my wife threw for our friends. Nobody could taste a difference between this recipe and any other recipe they were accustomed to, and even made remarks about how something so tasty cannot possibly be good for you!

Variations on a accustomed theme...

So last week I made the Graduation/bookworm cake for an open house. Someone saw the cake and wanted one for her sons open house today. She wanted basically the same cake with a few variations that spoke to her sons individuality. Her son went to the same school as the last student so the colors were pretty much the same. Her sons name is LaVario, but everyone calls him Vario. He's number 25 on the basketball team. His mother says he has a saying that "hes THAT guy, the one and only" and he excelled in his German and Mathematics classes, so I tried to illustrate all of that here. The Books and letters for Vario are made of red velvet cake. The Basketball is made of rice crispy treats covered with fondant. The rest of the letters and the worm are all made of fondant. Everything is completely edible. Buon Appetito!

Cooking With Dizzy: Peep Krispies

Hey everyone, Dizzy here. I got bored and noticed we had 3 lonely little hard peeps in the fridge from Saint Patrick's Day. We had butter and rice krispies cereal (with those strawberries in it but I picked them out). Ding ding ding, little light bulb went up. As a "cook", I don't like to waste food. So I couldn't waste the little peeps. 3 blind peeps, 3 blind peeps, see how they melt, see how they melt. I had never done this before but it turned out really good. Everything I did it by estimation and my experience with making rice krispie treats. Hope you try it when you have spare peeps with nothing else to do!! Ingredients: 1 1/2 cup rice krispies cereal 3 peeps Like 1 teaspoon of butter Itadakimasu!! ~Dizzy

Treat COPD and Asthma in 6 Easy Steps

Cardiopulmonary Obstructive Disease is life-changing. If you are uncertain about how to cope, be encouraged. You must make some changes, but COPD need not define your life. Follow a step-by-step guide to staying healthy. Good exercise and diet, using new skills, quitting smoking if you haven't done so already, committing to a rehabilitation program, and conserving energy will help.

In a 2009 issue of Clinical Science Journal, Dr. W.D. Man emphasizes the importance of your COPD wellness plan.

"Skeletal muscles represent a potential site to improve patients' level of function and quality of life," he notes in Exercise and Muscle Dysfunction in COPD: Implications for Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Implementing a plan with an occupational therapist is "the most effective non-pharmacological intervention in improving...health status."

Begin by consciously using your breathing muscles. Special exercises target those critical to respiration. Pursed-lip and diaphragmatic breathing techniques quickly increase blood oxygen saturation. With practice, they also calm you. Both exercises slow breathing to empty and fill lungs completely. You avoid obstructing air sacs using proper posture-standing or sitting up straight, aligning hips and knees, and holding your chin level. Most importantly, the muscles that move your chest and lungs get a workout.

Proper nutrition is another building block. Increase your energy level, support tougher bones and muscles, bolster immune function, and manage weight. Get plenty of vitamin B1 (dark green vegetables, tomato juice) which aids metabolism. A balance of vitamin E, (apples, olive oil, whole grain pasta), complex carbohydrates, (grains, broccoli, nuts), and protein (lean meats, peanut butter, eggs) builds muscle tissue. Prevent bone weakening with vitamin D (whole milk, fish), vitamin A, (squash, carrots), and calcium (cheese, spinach). Increase your red blood cell count. Vitamin B6 in bananas and white Rice helps transport oxygen. Resist illness with magnesium in black eyed peas, or halibut. Maintain low fat, sugar, and calorie intake to manage weight.

Your COPD therapy regimen includes individualized advice for activities of daily living. Breathing easier requires good body positioning. Get tips for more comfortable standing, sitting, lying down, and sleeping. Elevating your head with pillows can decrease symptoms during sleep. Stronger muscles support you to prevent slouching and leaning that makes breathing more difficult. Remember to follow only advice from a licensed health professional.

Next, try gentle exercises for your heart and lungs and listen to your body to determine how challenging you exercise. You want to challenge yourself but not to the point where you can't exercise and breath. If possible, purchase a pulse oximetor and keep track that your oxygen does not go below 90 during your workout. Stretch the sides of your neck to give your scalene muscles in your neck relief from the strain of labored breathing. Leg lifts and a very light ankle weight are another option.

Weight shifting activity is essential. Bones stay strong when they support body weight. Otherwise, skeletal tissue softens, and fracture risk is high. Weight-bearing activity does not require standing and your entire session can be completed sitting on a chair. However if you're able to stand, include standing exercises for short intervals to build tolerance and gradually increase your amount of time standing.

Put your COPD wellness plan to use every day. Notice how renewed strength brings independence. Climbing stairs, light lifting, or standing becomes easier. Decide how to invest your energy. Conserve strength by organizing belongings for easier access. Substitute sliding cookware for lifting it. Consolidate activities. Eliminate unnecessary tasks. Plan ways to become more efficient.

Understandably, you will sometimes feel anxious about COPD symptoms. Knowledge and positive action put you in control, and help you live well.

Our Version of Making Rice Cereal Treats

Brittany and Brianna from all4tubekids show you how they make rice cereal treats their way. The recipe is a little different than the average. They add peanut butter and honey to give the rice cereal treats a different but good taste. We don't eat these all the time. This is something we make once in a while. We have been pushing hard on the healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables. There was a little glitch in the video when brittany mentions the word favorite, it repeated several times and a few words were cut out. That must have happened during processing. Brittany and Brianna love to act on camera. I am trying to catch them being themselves without them acting for the camera. They both come up with their lines and rehearse them together then they come to me and say "Daddy, we are ready now!" We are making a collection of videos where they forget the camera is on and they are being themselves so stay tuned while we compile those clips. Treat Dogs As Your Own

We've had them as pets since time immemorial, even as companions. I remember myself having Noche Buena or that Christmas Eve dinner together with my favorite dog. We shared hearty laughs and sumptuous meals together. Too bad for my sister, she's sleeping.

Let me share you some tips and pointers on how to pamper those four-footed loyal species.

My dog loves small treats and whenever she's done eating her meal, breakfast, lunch or dinner; I always have something for her. By the way, her name is Maui, a mini pinscher. Lately, she craves biscuits with a dash of sugar and veggies.

I would bring her to the grocery and let her sniff different packs of treats. I once had cookies with choco chips, lamb biscuits and a chewbone with tutti frutti flavors. I had it placed in front of other doggie treats selections while I brought her at the other end of the aisle to let her senses guide her into the right choice.

Upon standing up, she headed frantically to the fruity flavor and lamb biscuits. She practically slid down and laid down on them like a spinning bowling ball and toppling pins.

We would always do the same thing over and over again except for her meal which is lamb and Rice. This way, we can have fun together almost everywhere. She once grabbed a bag of chocolates for my nephews and though its light on the pocket, the quality was there. It was sweet, my nephews love it!

Aside from doggie treats, you can have your dogs groomed at salons. Who said that humans are the only ones who has the right to be groomed and look at their best even on an ordinary day?

Salons nowadays give dogs the luxury to be masters. To be the one in command, the one to be pampered and cared for. A quick warm bath is given to dogs. They are given massages on the back, the torso and the legs. Massages give dogs the relief over tensions and agitations from everyday life. They can be nervous at times especially with unknown visitors who frequent the house.

After scrubs and shampoo, our paw friends will head straight into the drying area and still being given those occasional tummy rubs and back rubs. Their ears will be cleaned as well as their nose. Just about every nook and cranny will be scrutinized in their body. Wouldn't you love to have your dog be thoroughly cleaned before heading back to home?

Nails are trimmed. The same goes for their hair if their coats are long enough to be shagged. They can even have their nails polished or coated with anti-scratch pads so as to save valuable wood furniture and other sensitive things scattered around the house.
With them all cleaned within 30 minutes or so, you can now have them accessorized from head to foot.

Your local pet shop have hats. They can be those funny hats you see on soccer games. Or even hats that exude the dog's confidence over their counterparts.

Dresses are available and they come in different sizes as well as for different purposes. They have party dresses, formal coats, wedding gowns and sports attires. I love most is the Brazilian jersey of the world famous' yellow and green. Of course, it should be number NINE!

Lastly, shoes that will complete all the get-up! High boots are preferred by owners since it gives dogs the much needed protection for their ankles. Dogs have fragile legs especially little breeds.

To top it off, shops have collars that sparkle in gold plate or silver. They can bear names of up to nine characters. They come in different variety!

There are so many ways that dogs can be treated nicely just like a pat in the back or a simple brush of the coat down the neck. We have to remember that our friends are like humans in every bit. They should be loved, appreciated and cared for. Dressed, fed and sheltered.

Rice Nutrition and Preparation Methods For It

We tend to ignore what is around us and what we eat everyday unless we have the time and attention to have a closer look at them. Rice is one of such things.

You might know that Rice is the primary dietary staple for most of us. But you will probably be amazed at the fact that it is actually the staple food for half of the population on this planet.

You might know that Rice comes in two forms at large - white and brown. But you may not know that there are over 4000 varieties of Rice that are cultivated in different parts of the world.

You may think that rice has been always there. What would you say if I tell you that the rice is only 5000 years young?

These facts are not created to amaze people. There are good reasons for rice to get so high a position in the lives of human beings.

The primary reason is that rice is nutritional and healthy. It provides the human body with required nutrients and energy. Carbohydrates are among the main energy providers contained in the rice. In addition, it has very low salt, cholesterol and fat content, which is good for the health of the heart.

Do you have ever counted how many methods there are to prepare rice? Have you ever tried any of them?

The most popular ways to prepare it for meals in China are rice porridge and boiled rice. Boiled rice can be automated with rice cookers. To prepare rice for two, just pour a cup of rice with twice as much water into the cooker and press the cook button. When the cooker trips off, it's ready to serve.

Don't forget that rice goes with any meal - breakfast, lunch or supper. It is just something that you will never get bored with.

Surf's Up - Indoor Beach Party Ideas

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Hosting an indoor beach party is the perfect way to beat the winter blues. When it's cold and gray outside, you can entertain guests in the heart of the tropics with a little creativity and planning. Use it as a birthday party theme, a family gathering or just for fun when it's a beach party, everyone's happy. Indoor beach party ideas will vary depending on the age group, but there's no limit to the amount of fun you'll have.

Invitations

Deliver a single flip flop with the party information attached. When the guests bring the flip flop to the party, present them with the mate and they have new footwear for the event. Try researching some basic words in Hawaiian or a Caribbean language, such as "time" or "address" and incorporating them into a basic indoor beach party invitation. Inflate a beach blow up toy and write the info in black marker. Deflate the toy and deliver to the guests.

Decorations

Drape colorful beach towels over all the furniture and place beach umbrellas in strategic corners. Seashells nestled in sand in clear glass globes make excellent centerpieces and of course, have some classic beach tunes in the background. Use grass skirts from the dollar store to line tables and chairs. Blow up beach balls and floating toys look festive, as do sand toys.

Party food

Many guests will insist on fruit smoothies with fancy little umbrellas in them. Fresh fruit kabobs, especially with pineapple and mango, will recall the tropics. Beach and boardwalk foods such as corndogs, hot dogs and chips work well, too. Serve food buffet style from plastic sand buckets, overturned straw island hats and colorful platters. For the really ambitious, purchase some real coconuts and let guests eat real raw coconut and sample fresh coconut milk most people have never done that.

Activities

Decorate sandcastles made of Rice Krispie treats. Use small new sandcastle molds to shape the mixture, then decorate with small candies and frosting. Hold a hula competition, where teams have to select a story, nursery rhyme or movie plot and tell it through hula. The team that guesses the story correctly wins a prize. Young children can watch a beach movie and play "Pin the Surfer on the Surfboard." Any age can participate in a beach-themed scavenger hunt. Don't forget limbo and balloon volleyball, either. Get crazy with coconut bowling using a real coconut and empty soda bottles.

Planning an American Idol Party

Image : http://www.flickr.com

American Idol is truly a phenomenon that has captivated America! It has churned out singing sensations such as Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, David Archuleta, David Cook, and Daughtry to name a few.

It is a hit especially to the younger generation. Even the kiddies can't get enough of American Idol! So throw an America Idol-inspired birthday party, and let your little kid and the guests perform some favorite tunes like little rock stars complete with 'fans' of their own! Here's how.....

Set The Mood

In order to set the mood of your kid's American Idol party, decorate with music-themed props and goods. Have some inflatable guitars and microphones, rock 'n roll-themed centerpieces and music note confetti. Also, have a color scheme of blue plus silver. Use crepe-paper streamers, balloons and other decorations using the color scheme all around the party area. You can create a Hollywood sign out from a cardboard or styrofoam. Put the sign in your driveway (where it is visible) in order to direct the partygoers to the house. For a more Hollywood celebrity scene feel, how about putting out an old carpet coming up from the driveway and into the door.

Also stick large glow stars on the ceiling and walls for a cool decor effect. Stick some posters of pop-stars on the walls. You can also hang CDs from the ceiling using clear strings. This will make a lighting effect just like a good disco ball. Do not forget to add an 'American Idol' banner too.

Plan The Menu

Have a birthday menu of party food that is fit for little rockstars! First off is to have a music-themed cake. Have a Microphone Cake! You will need to have a sheet cake, plus a round cake for the 'microphone'. Next, cut a narrow piece from the sheet cake and frost it with chocolate frosting. This part will be your 'microphone's' handle. To simulate a remote microphone cord, you will have to attach a piece of black licoRice string at the bottom of the 'handle'. Finally, you will have to frost the round cake using some white frosting and then sprinkle blue colored sugar over the cake's top.

Rich desserts, appetizers and sweet cocktails will surely please the older guests. Also, dip some pretzel rod sticks in chocolate dipping, then serve them as American Idol microphones. Have some star-shaped Rice Krispie treats. Serving some Rockstar Energy drinks also adds a fun touch.

Have a Rockin' Party Invites

For a fun touch, use images of AI judges for your American Idol party invitations. Just stick a picture of Simon, Paula or Randy in the front of your yellow/gold invitation cards. Then add a voice bubble saying 'Here's your Golden Ticket!'

Write inside the cards: 'Welcome to Hollywood! (Your child's name) invites you to come audition for American Little Idol in honor of his (or her) Birthday! Performances will be held at (address, date, time). RSVP ahead of time to (phone number).'

Also, embellish these American Idol birthday party invites with blue and silver stars, then mail them out afterwards.

Rock Star Arrival and Introductory Activities

You can have your own AI Registration Table for contestants. Just prop up a table where the kiddies can have each of their contestant numbers. Or have 'All Access' show passes for the visitors to slip on around their necks. You can also provide some A.I. tattoos too.

Also, have your birthday party kiddie guests to fill out a sheet that provides what songs they will perform and with whom if it's a duet during the presentation.

You can also have a Door Hanger America Idol-inspired Party Activity. Get some American Idol Activity Kit available from a party store. Then have the li'l kiddies decorate the door hangers any way they want to. They can take their door hangers home as their party favors.

American Idol Party Games

Have a game of Rock Star Dress-up! This is an interesting and fun game that will surely get the kiddies energized and excited! Just fill 3 large customized boxes with colorful funky and cool pop-star wardrobes. Remember that the larger and more outrageous the clothes are --- the better! Place the boxes in different areas of the party room. Then shape a circle in the center of the room with the use of a masking tape. Have the kiddies walk around the circle while music is still playing. When the music ends, the kiddies must hurry to one of the customized boxes and put a single wardrobe item on. Then, they must rush back to the middle and start all over again. This dress-up game continues in this way until all of the wardrobe items are gone.

There is also The American Idol Makeover. You must provide some styling accessories such as make-up, brushes, hair gel, combs, etc. Divide the kiddies into pairs, so one kid in each pair is a stylist while the other is the performer. Then take an instant photo (digital or Polaroid) of all the performers. When 'Go Stylists Go!' is declared, the kiddie stylists should race over to their partners and perform their amazing work. You should set a timer of about 5-7 minutes. When the time expires, the partners should switch roles and do a second round with new stylists. At the end of the game, let the kiddies vote who should win the best stylist of them all!

Another fun American Idol game is Name That Tune. This game will test your guests' musical knowledge. The game's rules are quite simple: play a number of popular songs in a row and get the kiddies to secretly write the names of the songs and performers. At the end of the game, count to see who got the most number of correct songs and performer's names.

And of course, the main event should be an American Idol competition. Rent a karaoke machine and have the kids perform their own presentation! Remember that this game should not be threatening like the actual American Idol show. Just have an environment where all the kiddies will feel esteemed.

With this great American Idol party plan, your kid's birthday party will surely turn out a winner!

Delicious Baby Shower Centerpieces

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One thing that will never go out of style at baby showers is chocolate, guaranteed. Some would say that a baby shower would not be complete without chocolate! What does go in and out of style at baby showers, then, is the way in which that chocolate is served.

An up-and-coming baby shower centerpiece trend that is becoming quite popular lately is the Chocolate Fountain.

What is a Chocolate Fountain?

Now, most of you already know the answer and may have even used one. But for those of you who don't know: A chocolate fountain is a stainless steel 2 or 3 (or more) tiered fountain that melts chocolate and produces a continuous flow of chocolate film over the tiers. At a party, there is a variety of "dippers" which are used to dip into the chocolate film, cover your item with the desired amount of chocolate and eat it, savoring every moment. That last part is important!

Why are Chocolate Fountains Becoming so Popular?

Baby shower chocolate fountains are becoming popular because it is a novel and interactive experience. There is just something fascinating about dipping food into a waterfall of melted chocolate. Plus, everything tastes better with chocolate! Right?

A chocolate fountain is also an elegant and impressive baby shower centerpiece. Not very many parties feature a chocolate fountain, so it is a classy and unique baby shower centerpiece to have.

Also, a chocolate fountain is a popular baby shower food idea because it simplifies your menu. You serve chocolate and dippers. That's it! Minimal preparation is required. And with so many other things to plan for at the baby shower, it is nice not to have to worry about the baby shower food.

What type of Dippers should You Use?

Here are some popular Baby Shower Chocolate Fountain Dippers:

Apple Slices
Strawberries
Bananas
Pineapple
Grapes
Blueberries
Orange Slices
Maraschino Cherries
Marshmellows
Rice Krispie Treats
All Types of Cookies
Graham Crackers
Pretzels
Wafer Cookies
Animal Crackers
Peanut Butter Treats
Biscotti
Frozen Eclairs

Should You Use a Chocolate Fountain as Your Baby Shower Centerpiece?

If you love chocolate, then Of Course! Actually, there are plenty of other ways to feed your chocolate craving other than a chocolate fountain. It depends on how big you want the baby shower to be. If you have the budget and want a sure way to WOW the guests then a chocolate fountain would be a perfect touch to your baby shower.

They are somewhat expensive, so they are more of a luxury than a "must have." You can rent one at a party rental store - but be sure to rent one in your pRice range! There are several "types" and some are much more expensive than others. Some baby shower chocolate fountains are very big and there are smaller ones as well, which are less expensive, so shop around at a few different places to get the best price.

Bottom line: It all comes down to chocolate. As long as that is part of the baby shower, everyone is happy! And having a chocolate fountain there is one way to heighten the experience.

Press the Rice Krispies treat onto the bowl to shape it into a basket. Let it cool before removing.
On a sheet of waxed paper press some Rice Krispie treats into the shape of a handle. You may need to measure the bowl to make sure you make this long enough.
Turn it right side up and place on waxed paper.
In a mixing bowl combine the frosting and green food coloring.
Spread the frosting on the inside of the bowl to make it look like Easter grass. You can use other colors if you want.
Press the candies into the frosting to fill the basket with eggs.
Take your Rice Krispie handle and place frosting on both ends. Press on each side of the basket to hold in place.
To brighten up this kids Easter recipe you can use fruit roll-ups and wrap it around the handle for some added decorations.
